You're on the right track. But I'll bet it's your ignition key that isn't stock to your car.

Anyway, you can either pull both door lock tumblers and the rear hatch tumbler and have them keyed to you ignition key.

Or, in my opinion the right way, have them pull your ignition tumber and have it rekeyed to your match one of your door lock. The reason this is the better way is your VIN number will get you free (or almost free) key replacement. But that looses all it's value if you re-key the whole car to match the tumber set up it came with stock.

How does one get this free key replacement(or almost free)? Dealership?

I would have to get my doors re-keyed as they have been replaced, but the ignition key works in them so the lock cylinders aren't exactly up to snuff...

You simply walk into your local Mazda dealership with your VIN number for the key. Much easier to pull a door lock than the ignition lock.

I can't imagine it would be free.

@Hozzman:
I should think it'd be far easier to remove the ignition than the door locks.
The hatch would be pretty simple as well.

Dealership will only provide keys that match the VIN of your car, not locksmith services. For that reason, what ever locking thing that WON'T work with the key matching the VIN are the ones that should be rekeyed.

Removing the door locks is as simply as pulling the door panel, removing two 10MM nuts that hold the door handle on, unlatch the door lock bar, remove the fiour (4) big philips screws from the rear door edge to give wiggle room, wiggle the door handle out pushing toward the front of the car, unlatch the door latch bar, pry the door lock ring off and pull out the lock cylinder. All this can be done with a philips screwdriver and 10MM ratchet with extension. and honestly only about 10 minutes per door.

The ignition key cylinder is held on with slotless round studs. You'll need to dremel a slot into each of the studs to remove them or spin them off (not cut) a bit at a time with a hammer and chisel. And, you'll need to remove the plastic surround around the steering wheel hub and remove the bolts holding the steering column to drop it to provide the needed room to get at the studs.

I'd MUCH rather deal with the doors. Either way, then take the VIN matching key and locks to your friendly local lock smith.

Ah, well my ignition is already held with screws (dealt with the "anti-theft" things when I rekeyed my cylinder), so I figure five minutes, tops, to remove it.

Anyway, getting your locks rebuilt is a deeply unsexy way to spend money but it's one of those things that you'll appreciate every time you drive the car.
After it's done, give the new cylinder a break and don't hang a 4 pound keychain in it.

BUMP! I'd like to know what it cost too. If it's not too much, I'd rather have both my doors re-keyed and match the VIN... otherwise I'll just swap in the other complete lock set I have and keep a few extra key copies on hand.

It was payday and I felt like splurging on my locks so i payed 15 bucks a lock. Nice to not have people getting into my car. I have had two occurences so far with people getting into my car because i have no locks. Next time if I catch em trying to break into my car I will be chasing them with a pipe wrench. I dont even have anything to steal. i dont get it.
