uh it's easy to swap in an LSD w/ 4.3 into an s5 and call it a GTUs. That's why he wants to know little things like the door sticker and the 160mph speedo w/ voltmeter

Mine hits 3500 rpm at 80 mph I believe.

EDIT: But I guess, with a swapped rear drive, it might be neglible. I think the gear ratios are different between the GTUs and the other NA's, but I'm not sure, check the stickies.

Also, the LSD test of spinning wheels doesn't work so well since the LSD's are VLSD's.

My S5 GXL has a 160mph speedo, leather steering wheel and leather shift ****/ebrake handle. All S5's came with 160mph speedos im pretty sure. My GTUs has the same stuff. The no sunroof is a big help, but its been proven before that the GTUs isnt the only FC to not come with a sunroof. The vin wont help, I went to mazda with my Vin# and they looked it up and couldnt even tell me what trim it is, so dont bother with that.

Things to look for:
Manual window cranks(GTUs did not come with power windows)
No adjustable steering column
205/55/R16 sticker in door jam
No sunroof
Aluminum hood
No rear wiper
Cloth interior
Paint, Black with black interior, red with black interior, white with blue interior.
Radio has no cd/cassette
No map pockets on door
If you get to drive the car, you should be at 4,000rpm at 80mph in 5th gear.(4.33dif)

Thanks to everyone for all the info. Turns out the car I was looking at is a GTU and owner really didn't know what he had. Has GTUs stickers (maybe from Victoria British?). I guess stopping some one in the parking lot to ask if their car is for sale isn't the best way for me to find a GTUs - the quest goes on. Anybody know of a "real" GTUs for sale?

my 91 n/a has a 160 speedo as well. thats not a gtu's attribute

Ok...

I'm surprised no one called on this.

In 1989-1990, the only cars that came with an LSD were the GTUs, and the T2. If you narrow it down to being EITHER of those years, it IS a GTUs.

1991 has the T2 being the only one listed with an LSD, but people have reported having '91 NA coupe's with LSDs, yet Mazda totally denies this.
the 89-90 gxl had a vlsd

Clutch-type came on S4's, Viscous came on S5's. The clutch-type grips better, but the viscous lasts longer.

Torsen is by far the best of both worlds, owning both of them.

except that torsen's snap under high power load....if you have a high power drag car, stick with the clutch-type. Any sort of road racing, go with the torsen. If you're just cheap, viscous is your best bet.

I don't know, 4k rpm's seems a bit high for 80 mph. Then again I changed my tires so I might be reading a bit funny, but I'm getting 3,500 rpm's @ 80.

And is it a 4.33 ring and pinion? I always thought it was 4.30, at least that's what Mazda says if I'm not mistaken.

Whoops, apologies for the double post.

You are right, it is 4.30. As for the 80mph @ 4k, im not really sure since my speedometer cable isnt attached, but thats what a lot of people say. I know at 4k rpm in 5th in my S5 GXL im at 100mph. But I guess that coincides with losing top end power with the 4.30 diff.

Do you have a GTUs?

Yah, I figured that was right, because when I drive the RPM and speed differ from my GXL.

I remember Icemark said that the GTUs' are just rebadged 89's that the factory had laying around without dealers who wanted them and then they couldn't be sold as 89's anymore. He or someone else said that there is something different about the vin in the engine compartment. I think he said part of it was scratched out and redone.

I finally looked at my 1990 GTU - it has a 160mph speedo so kill that thought - but I don't have the leather wrapped steering wheel so that helps

that's weird, in a regular 4.1, 80 is at 3k
in a 4.3, 80 is at 4k

So why is 80 for me at 3.5k? Would it have anything to do with 225 size tires?

NO, covered just the other day, the 89 non turbos came with 150 MPH speedos while the Turbos came with 160 MPH speedos.

The on the non turbos, the 160 MPH speedos only started coming on the 90 models.

1990 GTUs's are just 1989's left overs that didnt sell and had the vin changed on the firewall. Its the same exact car.

DING! DING! DING!
Problem solved then! Unless another model of RX7 was sold with a redone firewall vin, you will be able to tell if a GTUs is real by this.
...unless you have a car that has its vin illegally changed. Could we have someone with a real GTUs post a pic of the redone part so we know what to look for? Can Icemark or someone else tell us what it should have in its place?

Been posted many times before

The vin is the same except the K is crossed out on the firewall and there is a L near it instead

and that only applies to the 90 GTUs. The 89 GTUs used the K in the VIN
