Question can I mix and match tranny parts?

I have a 90 gxl and 89 gtu tranny. Both are shot. The countershaft and main drive gear in the gxl and the 1/2 gear assembly in the 89. What I'm wondering is, can I put the 1/2 gear assembly on the 89 gtu tranny? I know that they have different gear ratios but I don't know enough about how this stuff works to really know the answer. Any clues?

I *think* it would be fine, and no, the GTU and GXL had the exact same ratios 1-5, only the GTUs got the .76 5th gear, but 1-4 was the same).
