Can exhaust leak cause hiccups?
Hey!, so i got my S4 T2 with about 120,xxxkms. the only mod it's got is a 3" full racing beat exhaust system (DP, Pre-Silencer, Dual exhaust)
I'd noticed that when getting boost in second gear and up, or rather when accelerating past 3500-4000 rpm, the car would tend to buck, hiccup, or hesitate i guess, and *what i thought was the turbo* suddenly would start to make a "grinding" noise.
At first i thought "i must have a bad bearing in my turbo" since it would only happen when accelerating under boost or having the throttle wide open past 3500-4000 rpm. Then yesterday, it started making that sound constantly, as soon as i'd hit the throttle, *you could hear the turbo grinding as it came up to speed* and the engine was just extremely louder altogether. I proceeded to search for "bad turbo" on the forums and ended up finding a similar case;
Apparently, his problem had been with his downpipe. the nuts securing the DP to the turbo were loosening and backing off the bolts, creating an exhaust leak when there would be enough backpressure. Just so happens my car had the same issue. unfortunately, i can't check the nut on the underside, but i'm pretty sure it's gone. So now i need to buy a new RB gasket for the downpipe and this time install it with locking nuts or at least locking washers.
Finally, my question is, once i get this downpipe secured tightly with the new gasket, should it eliminate the bucking/hiccup/hesitation or just solve the noise and exhaust leak?
Thanks!

I had essentially the same problem of my manifold to RB downpipe bolts backing off at one point, and it caused what felt like misses and stumbles, at higher rpms, and when I would go over bumps. I was looking for an ignition problem, but tightening the downpipe fixed it for me. My car's na, but sounds very similar to your problem, other than the noise. Mine was getting louder, especially at cold start, but it was gradual and snuck up on me.
