a/c problem

need help..... there is a loud grinding noise coming from engine comp everytime i push a/c button & car shakes. a/c tech telling me that some kind of a/c valve is not working & he need to take dashboard apart to get to valve!! cost around $300-500. he said freon/compressor are ok. i am a new owner.just bought this car.1987 non turbo w/80k. need expert advise.thanks.

I'd say he's talking about the expansion valve. You have to remove the evaporator inside the car to remove and replace it. You have to deplete the refigerent first, but you knew that.
It's not that difficult to do the actual removal. You have to disconnect the pressure and return lines from the engine compartment side first, remove the glove box for easier access to the evaporator from inside. The evaporator is held with just three/four nuts and some simple couplings on the inlet/outlet side of the evaporator, then just pull straight out. Remove the plastic cover and there it sits. You'll probably also noitce years of leaves, bugs and whatnot covering the fins on the core.
One of the fsm's online has the a/c heater section that shows how to remove and replace it.

thanks for you help. owner daughter told me that car was sitting for long time and when i bought the car it was full of leaves and dirt.
not sure which fsm online search to look for ,please advice.thanks again.moe

thanks for all your help guys. i am taking car back to service for check psi again before they remove dashboard. tech did told me that he needs to plug in somekind of pressure gauge and need the car for a day.hopefully this will fix problem.
