Question A/C problem

Do I have to change all of my seals to put a differnt type of refridge stuff in it? The guy at the dealership told me that I had to put R17 in it. Or the seals will break. I was just wondering if he was just trying to get me to go "Oh! OK I'LL pay $400.00 for you to screw me hard in the ***" ....would he be doing that if i took it to him and told him to go ahead and fix my a/c?

This has been asked and answered several times this summer. Suggestyou do an A/C search.

Bottom line: he is telling you the truth. A change to 134 will require a complete system flush. different "o" rings, and different compressor oil.

All you need to do first is a leak down test, I believe it is called a nitrogen test. If no leaks then you are fine. If it was originally R12, just have the entire system evac'd to remove all of the oil. Then fill it with 134.

My uncle that works for BART here in the bay area and is a certified climate control technician. He did it to mine and works fine.......no o-rings needed here. I asked him if it the o-rings need to be replaced due the change. He said NO. If it does not leak...it does not leak.

I read on an EPA site somewhere that it was originally thought that new O-rings were necessary but that it has now been proven that if they are in good shape no change is necessary. I changed all mine myself...it was easy and cost me like $10.00. Flushed all the lines with Brake Cleaner....converted to R134A and it is working fine two years later.
