Buzzer and other Beepers - For the Deaf
I was wondering how many buzzers or beepers are in my 86 GLX N/A.
I have tinnitus and can't hear frequncies over 900 hertz (cycles). Some guests in the car complain they hear beeping.
No lights are lit or burned out. (sorta think the steering wheel alignment sensor is going off from what I've read)
I know I can't hear the buzzer or beeps myself so, I want to instal LED lights on a little panel close to the big idiot light center so I can see if a buzz - beep is occurring.
Anyone know how many buzzers - beepers I would have to convert?
This may be one for IceMark.

Well, the car buzzes for low coolant, low oil, and engine redline, but these three are all the same physical buzzer. The power steering computer also has it's own "ding" type sound, and then theres the generic door chime thing that only seems to work about half the time on my car.
The power steering computer is located right above the drivers feet under the dash board, but I dont know what you'd have to do to get
to it's buzzer, or any of the other ones, i've never tried

The low oil/coolant buzzers are the most important ones and they're both accompanied by a warning light.
Redline buzzer (same as low oil/coolant) is pretty obvious when it's going to be going off.
As for the beeping coming from the power steering computer... I'd probably just get someone to tell you the pattern and fix what's wrong.
That would be the easy way.
As for what you want... paging Hailers/Icemark...

The only buzzer that matters is the "joybuzzer" which warns on coolant and oil level, as well as redline.
It's a buzzer located in the instrument cluster. You can directly replace that buzzer with some high brightness LEDs and mount them wherever you feel is appropriate. I'd get some super bright blue LEDs and mount them just at the edge of my vision.

In my 86 GXL n/a, I've never heard the redline buzzer...
I think I've seen somewhere that it said you can change when it will go off with a screw, so you can choose any RPM you want it to go on, unless the previous owner turned it all the way up.. I don't think the buzzer works at all... is there an easy way to find out if it's actually there and in working condition and if it's not, how to fix it?
Thanks

Thanks for the replies.
I rev'd the engine to 7.5k RPM and didnt hear the buzzer. A buzzer sound should be a lower tone I should be able to hear, but I didnt hear anything.
A freind did help me with the beep code for the steering + the horn and turn signal canceler were broke when I bought the car but I have them in place now but still aparently not exacty right - so the beeps. I have read some posts about those beeps and think I need to clean the round switch the steering wheel and all conect to. Just didnt rip it apart again.
Thanks Aaron for the main buzzer location.
Not sure if I want to mount a super blue light because of night time driving.
Be nice to wire the LED's to the clocks display - dimmer but that's another post if I figure this out.
An LED light would need to be wired correctly for polarity and a in-line resistor added so it wouldnt burn up.
lol, Ya My5ABaby, I would like to hear Icemarks opinion on this matter.

An idea of where to mount the light would be in an empty spot on your idiot cluster. There's an empty spot on the drivers (?) side that has nothing to it (I think CEL on the S5's).

Easy link to the FSM is in my sig. Body Electrical chapter, power steering computer section. There's a chart with the meaning of the beeps per morse code (so to speak). Make sure you lign up the arrow on the steering position sensor and clean and apply dielectric grease.
The buzzer is very easy to get to (once the instrument panel is out, and you can check if it's good using a DMM and solder (if you're ok w/ a soldering iron) some wire and an LED.
The lights on/door open, seatbelt chime is also fairly easy to get to and is located on one of the boards in the CPU to the left of the dead pedal. More info in the same chapter in the FSM.
