Buying an 86 rx7 tonight...anything i should look out for
Ya so hopefully im buying an 86 rx7 tonight. hes asking 800 for it but it might be less. i was wondering if there was anything i should look out for, like common problems that is. his daughter drives it everyday and it runs great he said. going to look at it tonight and hopefully be coming home with it. theyve only had it for 6 weeks...his daughter just got into an accident with the moms minivan so now theyre petrified shes gonna be under a truck or something with the little rx7. i guess it has like 150,000 miles on it tho but she drives it every day and they said its runs great (of which i will see for myself tonight). just wondering if there were little things i should look out for so i dont overlook anything. its red with dark tinted windows...stock...ohhh i wish it was a tII lol. but if the engine craps the bed sometime along i could put a tII engine in it right? or like a ford or chevy engine...how much would something like that run me? im really excited to get this car...it would be my daily driver for the time being but its going to be my project car...i know it will go slowly (progress anyways) but i always wanted one.
One thing i was worried about was not feeling power behind it. My last car of which i just got rid of was a 2003 dodge srt4 with about 250hp. the rx7 is like 140-150 right...just hope i wont yearn for to much power right away...the rear wheel drive should be fun tho...
opinions?ideas?things i should look out for?

thanks man that should help a bunch...cool
anyone know how much it would cost to do a tII conversion? or if i should think about putting a different type of engine in it...seems like blasphemy to me to swap a rotary engine out of an rx7 for a v8 or something but i see alot of people do it so i wonder...? lol

pulsation dampener doesnt leak, oil metering pump lines have oil in them while running. engine starts right up at crank. it doesnt smoke to much at start up (or any at all but some is alright)
oh here is the fun thing
rev in nutral to 4-5 rpm and hold it for a few secconds. about 3-7 seccons usualy gets mine going. if it smokes. hahah. ask him to lower the price
its not a horrible problem. mine runs just fine and strong and it does the same thing. but. hell. use it as leverage

^^mine smokes bad at those rpms, stupid oil seal but it will be fixed soon (with a s5 TII block lol)
Look for rust! You could also check to see if the 5th/6th ports are frozen, depends on how his daughter drove it.
Make sure it is warmed up before you rev it :p

Dude, you're getting it for $800... any running driving car can't have much more wrong with it to negotiate lower.
I'm not sure that you sound ready to buy the car if you have no idea how hard it is to do a full motor swap... you make it sound like it's a complete sinch... when in reality with no experience/parts/tools it could run you 5-15x (LS1) the cost of the car.
I doubt it will have nearly as much relative pull as the srt4, those things are pretty powerful and make a good autocross showing -- much better than I do in my RX-7. The handling would be better if the suspension were replaced, and rear wheel drive is rear will drive. Why are you going from a $20k+ 2000+ srt4 to an $800 20yr old RX-7?
BTW, the tinted windows aren't stock.

not meaning any Disrespect ,But **** if the car starts, runs and Stops..800 is good...800 dollars is Nothin now a Days,Compared with what New actually goes for.You are getting a 20 year old car for Chump change...Don't by a car at night Or In the Rain...(good hints I go by)..and If you don't like the Engine change it,You're the one Payin for it.good luck in what ever you decide. The Rotary is a Learning Experience,I find out something new every day.Just have fun and don't let it Take you down.
