Buy a MAZDA RX7 GLS 1991 or 1986?
Hi there,
I'm interested in buying a RX-7, but witch is better? I live in The Netherlands BTW. Both cars are N/A.
1->FC from 1986. It's driven for about 100.000KM and it looks like the owner took really good care of the car. There has been no engine change or what so ever. If the engine in still good howmany KM can I drive before I need an engine rebuilt? It costs about 3500$
2->FC from 1991. Has driven for about 124.000KM. Dunno if the owner took good care of it. It costs around 3000$
What are the differences between these cars? Pics: FC from 1991 is white and 1986 is light-black.

judging by the pics NEITHER car is a 1991. the white one looks like the 1986 (due to the small sport spoiler). the grey ones looks like either a 86-88. but i'm pretty sure neither car is any newer than an 88 model.

all 89-91 cars had round style tail lights...and the side molding is always the same color as the car. and no 89-91 car had that little spoiler stock. they had a more "meaty" wing. plus those are rims off an older car...

White car is definately not a 9.1 It is either an 87 or 88.
Doesnt have body color emblems, sport mirrors, round taillights, different front facia, blha blah.
Hey- anyone notice the side marker lights though?? Cool.
Even though the guy is lying about it, which may present other problems,
In my opinion, I would get the white one, it doesn't have aftermarket rims, window tint or anything (unlike the grey one). This means it's bone stock- it looks really clean/straight and was probably driven pretty tamely, not owned by a kid or anything. Just a daily driver car like any other. Engine is probably in better shape.

Change all of the fluids, just so you will know how many miles are on them.
Maybe do the ATF trick (search for it).
Change the spark plugs and wires.
Flush the radiator.
Maybe replace the battery.
Run a few bottles of injector cleaner through it.
Check all the belts, and replace as necesary.
New wiper blades.
Clean all of the debis out of the radiator. Usually a lot of leaves get in between the oil cooler and the radiator. Need to remove the splash guard.
Check all the brake pads
that's all I can think of right now.

If the engine is handled correctly when should you replace the Apex seal before they break? The car has the original Apex seals for about 15 years, driven 70.000 Miles. Can you use the engine for over 120.000 Miles without an Apex seal change?

The life expectancy of the apex seals largely depend on the maintenance of the motor. Some ppl have gotten over 200K with their original motor. Get compression checks on both vehicles.

Looking at the ATF trick I searched for a non-working car. I found one. 1987, red. They say it's in a good condition except the motor won't run. Can the ATF do the trick or does the engine need to run if you want to do the trick?

The motor doesn't have to run to do this, but it would be easier if the motor was able to turn. Many ppl have gotten rotaries unstuck with ATF. Use the search at the top of the page with "ATF" or "ATF trick" as the subject to find a bunch of posts with ppls methods and comments.
