Buy a JDM engine AND pass emissions?

Has anyone ever bought a J-spec engine AND passed emissions?

I assume that because Japanese emissions are more stringent, their engines could pass, but I'm not sure about this matter. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

I don't see why not, as long as the thing runs well and has all of its emissions equipment hooked up and functioning it should pass fine.

But you realize that motor might not even run right? It very well may, but I am only speaking from experience when I tell you that buying a J-spec engine doesn't necessairly mean you won't have to rebuild it before it runs.....

That's a good deal if it runs, just need an ECU and you'd be golden. Shipping is a little high. I shipped a block for $50 before, just labeled it as like, "scrap" came in one peice..but idk.

as long as the engine has all the US spec emissions equippement hooked up for the year engine, it should pass emissions fine.

I'm not sure how to tell if this is an s4 tII engine or an s5 tII engine... I could check the vin or something... maybe the 10-blade fan from a s5... nonetheless, N332 and N333 are turbo II ECUs, which one is for the s4 and which s5?
thanks for the help

I hear that USDM and JDM engines are identical, so I 'could' use mix US+J-spec equipment if the J-spec engine doesn't have any or is incomplete, right?

What I'm more concerned about is finding a good catalytic converter and doing that air-pump-acv thing where it pumps air directly into the split-air valve... just to make sure i pass...

The JDM engine does not have an EGR so if you install the engine just use USDM manifolds and emissions.

Yes, internally they are the same, it's the emissions that are different.

For example the S4 Jspec does not have the EGR and has a reduced sized air pump. You would need those at US spec to pass US emissions, although you might be able to pass, just bolting on a non working EGR as the EGR really does very little for emissions- so it would be just for visual

its no posible ,i tried everything, leaning it out, running a cat, etc etc. I spent over a hundred dollars trying to pass, it was twenty dollars each time i went

At the time FC's were made the Japanese emissions regs were less stringent that the US's, which is why the J-spec FC engine is missing some of the emissions equipment fitted to US models. Without swapping the US-spec emissions equipment on, it shouldn't be able to pass.

So the EGR, I can just bolt it on for visual only,, that would be cool..

again, as long as the engine is tuned properlly and the US spec emissions equippment are on it, there should be no issues at all with the car passing emissions.

If you are not passing then you have tuning issues and need to have other things fixed- regardless of if it is a US spec or Jspec motor.

And as far as bolting on the EGR for a S4 Turbo engine for visual, the place on the intake manifold is there, regardless of if it is drilled to use a EGR or not on the Jspec motors.

what specific equipment do they look for on the visual inspection? is it just stock intake/exhaust, egr, air pump, acv and cat? what about some of the solenoids?

EGR (if listed on the underhood sticker), cats, air pump, PCV, solenoids to control the EGR and PCV, air intake, and filter box. Anything listed on the underhood sticker.

Not ACV, although at my last test, I convinced the guy testing that the ACV was the EGR.

I am so glad they don't do emission tests here, I don't own a car with a catalytic converter on it. Every time I have I have problems. We have a local shop that for cash only no receipt or credit cards will chop the cat off and run a straight pipe. because while they don't test for emissions it is illegal for a shop to take it out for you. And if you don't have one they are supposed to put one in.

just a matter of time before you will have emissions.

More states have emission testing now than ever before with each year more requiring testing. Many are once a year testings (unlike California which is only once every other year).

And remember it is a Federal law that you have emissions, and while the Feds don't currently go after emissions scofflaws, they could.
