a thought and a question. the auto tranny is not quite as bad as i thought it would be, definitly 5spd is better but if you learn how to drive fast using the auto its not to slow. my question is to aaron, you mentioned a used miata 6spd is less than 1000 bucks but will it bolt up to a fc or do you have to have it put into the fc box? i have two 5spd trannys but they are not in the best shape so unless i rebuild them im looking for a new manual tranny box.

As for the HOLD button, I can't believe so many people are taking wild guesses and/or posting dumb suggestions for its use. It holds the gearbox in the gear you select, that's all. No automatic shifting. Seems pretty obvious and self-explanatory to me.

Actually, the auto tranny ECU has 4 different shift maps that it chooses from. So, if you floor it, it will shift at a different RPM.
Not to mention that the governor will have to spin faster to get up enough pressure to get the vacuum modulator to over come the pressure applied by the engine. Thats why auto trannys have a vacuum line attached to the engine. The harder the engine works, the faster the governor has to spin before it shifts, which results in a higher RPM before shift.
Some cars have a cable from the throttle body to the tranny instead of a vac hose. My friends '91 BMW has a cable. It would stretch out when he press the gas, but it didn't return to its normal position. It stayed stretched out and so if he was under light load, the cable was stretched as if the accelerator was wide open. The tranny wouldn't shift out of first until it got to 45 mph, then it would chirp the tires and launch him to 70mph.
I had an auto tranny until last weekend

In fact, I wonder what the hold button actually does... cut vaccum signal to the trans completely? I'll dig out the FSM and post what I find.
I picked up an auto FC yesterday and I'd like the trans to wait a bit longer under light throttle conditions. (but still run full auto) This thing runs through 4 gears and hardly gets over 2k rpm if I'm easy on the gas!

man I wish I could stay under 2k RPMS through 4th gear... your gas mileage must be amazing, that is the downfall of the 5sp i rarely shift under 3k or even at 3k hell most of the time i get to at least 4500... Its fun but mileage suffers big time

I've no idea why we're answering a four year old thread. BUT that is the owners manual in the link above.

Ok, I just read all of the "Hold Button" threads. Now I understand that since I'm S4, I don't have one. And after reading the auto trans segment of the FSM, my head is spinning. (j/k, but it may be harder to fool the trans than I thought) I'll try messing with the vaccum line and see what happens though.
I appreceiate the input. As for the thread being so old, they are all new to me.

Yeah, I read some manual swap threads too and it sure would be nice, but I bought this car for transportation and I have waay too many projects already. It's completely unmolested too, (passed smog this afternoon) and was far too sweet a deal to pass up.
I have been bitten though... got my first taste of the RX and I love it!
