Burned my fingers on the altenator pully

So the belt on my altenator broke on the way to work today (still made it to work though 15 mile drive, glad i bought the expensive battery ) and for whatever dumb reason i grabbed the altenator pulley to see if it has seized. It hadn't seized but it sure as hell was hot and i've got burned fingers to prove it! Looks like the bearings are wearing out...

Anyone know if a can of white lithium grease would keep this thing going until i can get a replacement?

I had the same issue on a freshly rebuilded alternator, turns out there was some sort of corrosion on the alternator\engine pulley, and it seems that was causing it (I replaced the belt and it broke again with a couple of days). I sanded both pulleys grooves with a fine grid sanpaper, and then replaced the belt, never had the issue again.

I'll give that a shot when I get home, thanks!

a hot pully might not just be caused by a worn bearing

the belt that broke was probably old and shitty anyway, so it was probably slipping and creating tons of friction on the pully...and since those pullys spin so god damn fast, they will get hot

next time try touching it with the back of your hand

unless it is seized up, then good luck with fixing it

The belt was new, I installed it on Monday. It was slipping though, which is why I think its the bearing. I will sand down the pullies though and see if that helps.

Just try and spin the pulley now that's it cool, to see if any resistance or noise.

It spins freely, but i'm not certain about a noise. I'll check that later.

Better to touch it when it's hot then when it spinning.
