Question brake question

alright so i took my car to mineke and had my wheel hub fixed because it was broken. I also had my brakes done, rotors and brake pads. So they put them on and i drive it around for a day or 2. Then it starts to make a really loud screeching sound. sounds like nails on a chalkboard. So i take it back and over heard them talking over the phone getting my parts. I clearly heard "89 brake pads and rotors" so they ordered them. My question is would that be the reason my brakes screech. My car is a 1988 convertable, and 89 is the year where they made alot of changes to the rx7. so if anyone can answer my question i will be very greatful. Thank you in advanced.

It is quite possible that they did indeed put the wrong application on your vert. Im not sure if the verts had the 4 pot front calipers and heavy duty rears with vented disks, but it could be that they didnt know there was a difference and you quite possibly didnt specify the type either.

Check your reciept and call them back to see exactly what they installed and for what style caliper, should either be heavy duty(4 pot front and vented rear rotor with large finned caliper) or non heavy duty.

Its not hard to check actually. A visual inspection is all that is required.

4 pot calipers onteh front: self explanatory, the front caliper should be large and require a minimum of a 15inch wheel to clear.

Heavy duty rear: This one is a bit harder to tell as dependign on your wheel/tire choice you may have to remove to get a good look. First off check the rotor itself, is should be vented if heavy duty, not the single layer rotor youd find on a 4lug vehicle. The caliper itself should have large fins on it for cooling purposes, again a 15inch wheel is the smallest that will fit on it as a 14 will snugly fit but not move much with out great force(thus damageing the rim).

Now you also mentioned that your hub was damaged and they replaced it? If that is the case then they may have not used new bearings, or didnt grease the shaft.

This is why I decided to perform my brake job myself, ordered everything from O'reilly's Auto parts and didnt have a problem, save swappign my hubs out.

yeah, i would look but my original brakes are gone... as in the mineke people prolly took them out. so i cant really tell what used to be on them. right now the brakes look the same all around. and now that u mentioned it i wish i did the job myself, the only reason i didnt is because my father offered to have the hub fixed and new brakes to be installed along with them. 700$ thats an offer i cant refuse.

O.o yeah...thats an offer i refused...I think i paid...100 for a parts car(4 new 5lug hubs and the beefier calipers) and about 300 in pads and rotors.

I thought teh sports and Turbo only had 4 port brakes? It's so uncertain now. Anyway, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a difference in S4 and S5.

I bellieve all models except the base came with the big brakes, though maybe icemark or someone much more knowledgable can chime in...I know the S5 gxl i had was heavy duty in the brake department, and my 88se was 4 lug non heavy duty....

well i looked in the the thread that showed specs for each year, and i found that the 88's had vented front rotors that were 9.8inches and the rear rotors were 10.3 inches would this be a factor. the brakes on my car right now are the same size all around. and im pretty sure the front ones arent vented would this result in the loud screeching noise i get?

If they are indeed larger then your factory caliper is rubbing against it, damaging the caliper housing. TAKE IT BACK ASAP. Tell them you want the correct part installed since they obviously didnt do it correctly if you have a screeching sound. As a matter of fact, this reminds me of when my old tbirds brake caliper lost a bolt, thus grinding the caliper housing against the brake rotor, caused the top edge of the rotor to be shiny, and not teh usual rusty color that usually happens.

yeah im going to take it back after school tomorrow. atleast they have on contract that they would fix the problem if there are any. Which there obviously are and if they can't fix it i get my money back. Which i will use to buy the proper brakes and parts then install it myself. It's no fun driving around being afraid to brake because the noise is so annyoing. i just pray it's fixed and done properly tomorrow.

Yeah, no brakes is a scary feeling. In fact, when they do get around to ordering your new equipment, stand right there and watch them input the information. I know when I go back to buy new pads and such im going to confuse the hell outta the guys at O'rielly's....since my car is slipping far away from stock...
