boost issues and bad idle 89 S5
ok all was well till i drove home from work and the max psi was only 3.5-4, it had done this previously when i took the "muffler" off of the BOV, so i reinstalled it with no cure. i can almost hear a leak on the backside of the turbo but why would it build boost if there was a leak? i suspect the wastegate....... any advice please.
Now the idle question, i replaced the filter box with a cone filter and when i start the car it will die or stumble around while it is warming up. but after 2-3 minutes of driving the idle is steady right where it should be.... so guys please soak me in your knowledge.... and yes know i should have searched... but an online time lmit kinda ruins that for me thanks

Yes. Always start with a compression test. It's relatively quick and easy to do. It can save you lots of time and money over doing a trial-and-error method of solving the problem. I wish I had done that for my car. You could have one problem masking another (leaky injectors causing flooding, but there was actually low compression the whole time).
Although, it doesn't sound like you have hot-start issues, so maybe its not necessarily the compression? Still, you definitely want to start with those numbers before anything else. From the little I have learned, it seems compression is #1 priority with these rotaries.

my car does the same idle thing, i fixed most of it with re-grounding my car....
as for the boost problem, check the vacuum line going to the BOV, i believe that was the line i blew off and it refused to boost past 5psi....

well usually it helps if the waste gate is connected to the actuator, i feel like and idiot now, but i just got pissed off at it then found the rod laying next to the turbo... yea and now the idle isnt messing around anymore...weird

yeah, the rod came off my wastegate before, the E-clip rusted up and fell off i guess. I'd like to drill a hole in mine where the E-clip goes so i can use a cotter pin. i hate messing with those dang clips, so agrivating to install and remove. yes, i regularly, it seems, have to take my turbo out. either a leaking line(oil or water), or blown gasket, or blown turbo, ect. i can do it pretty quick now.
