Big time problems...87 N/A 13B 5 spd

Okay, first off, my name is Ryan...it is nice to meet everyone! I recently picked up a 1987 RX with the 13B N/A 5spd trans. Upon buying the car I needed to replace the EGI Unit (Computer) and the Fuel Pump. After installing the two parts the car started up and went. It went well except for the 3800-4000 accel hesitation. Well, after driving the car everyday for a month it would not start.

I looked at the obvious...I was getting fuel, compression and vacuum. I was not getting spark. As a matter of fact, there is NO power going to the coils. NONE! There is ghost voltage in the coil circuit just before the coils of about .06 mV. So, I pulled the EGI unit out and it smelled burned. I opened it up to find that there was a blown resistor...a 4 ohm 1 watt resistor connected to pin F in the unit.

The input for that pin is the Port Air Solenoid Valve. Well, I checked it out under the hood. The whole secondary air system is disconnected...there is no air pump, hoses, and so on. I disconnected the connector that goes into the port air valve and the EGI Unit almost fried again. Correct me if I am wrong, but the PASV shouldn't have anything to do with the power going to the Coils...Should it?!

This week I am going to test my Crank Angle Sensor...my instructor seems to think that it could be that. If you need any more info I can provide it...thanks...

Oh!!! Today I got in touch with Rotary Inc. They are a new company in Albuquerque specializing in RX7's! So, they were saying to disconnect the wire from the EGI Unit that comes from the Port Air Solenoid Valve and then go on to remove the Port Air unit and install a block off plate for it.

As far as the Coil not getting power, he told me to check the ground point on the engine underneith the intake manifold...does anyone agree with this?!

Sounds like you have a short in the system. And that is causing your car to blow ECUs.

So...Here is the deal! I removed the Battery, I was getting a total of 11.3 volts...So, I took it out, the engine was cranking slow. I took the Batt out of my Stang and put it in the Rex... I removed the ground near the VIN under the hood and cleaned the connectors...I then reconnected it! After that I disconnected the Port Air Solenoid Valve wire (Big yellow connector third pin from the left on the top...Brown and Red wire)

I plugged in the EGI unit and cranked the car...it fired right up. I still have the annoying popping when recovering from high RPM due to the exhaust leak...and I also still have the 3800RPM Hesitation...I am going to attempt to do that fix for it with the wire on the Boost sensor...I will post my findings...
