Beyond repair?

Ok, here's a shot of my bumper. Had a little mishap in my rex. Do you think it's worth getting it fixed or would it be cheaper to just get a bumper off a junker and have it painted? Some of the ecratches are like a mm deep and as you can see it's dented in a bit.

I wrapped my hood over the roof at 80mph, but I still did my exhaust. I say, if the damage is ok with you, just leave it for now. If every time you walk up to the car, it bugs you, get that done first. And yes, just get the bumper off a junker and have it reapinted.

You live in Canada.. if there is any paint missing, you are just inviting rust..


I would fix it and keep it nice.. at least if there is any bare metal..

Well, the rear bumber is not metal, so no rust for you. I say, get a bumber off a wrecked car (spend no more than $150 on it) then do the exhaust, and then get it repainted. What is more important to you? Looking pretty or going fast?

Well, the rear unibody also had a dent in it.. And you can't ever replace that with out alot of work.. it is not a fender..


Like i said.. if there is bare metal, fix it first.. even if you just primer it..

I really only see scratches on the fender. The unibody looks fine to me.

Well there is a fairly large crease next to the light on the unibody.. Paint like to fall off after something like that.. (usually in large chunks..)


So, to say it a 3rd time, if the paint has come off and you see bare metal.. get it fixed.. even if you have to primer it.. it will rust in a few months most likley..

The rear fenders are not seperate peices like the front fenders.. they are part of the unibody.

Yup he's right, the bumper pushed into the body a little and cracked some paint off. There was bare metal showing but I threw on some touch up paint to try and stop rusting. Will it be ok with touch up paint or will it rust just the same? I do live in south-west Canada so cars don't just rust to pieces like in the east.

Any guesses on what it'll cost me to fix? I can get the bumper and tailight fairly cheap, it's the body work and painting I'm concerned about.

I appreciate the help guys!

I stand corrected. I say do whatever makes you happy. Fix it, leave it, whatever. I say about $300 USD or so for a clean fix.

I'm in Victoria, BC.

The tires are Nexen N2000's. Ya I'd never heard of them either, but my friend suggested them to me and they were pretty cheap. They're sticky buggers, not bad but I'll be going with something else when these burn out.

Well, if the bare metal is covered with some sort of paint. it should last you a while without worry..

I hink due to the availabilty of the rear bumper on the Serie IV's I would go a head and purchase a new one. If It were on a Series V, however, you would probably pay near double. Just find a used one and swap It out!

Great thanks for all the replies.

I'm going to swap out the cracked tailights and pick up a bumper but not get it painted/installed, do my exhaust then save up to get all neccessary bodywork done and repaint her.

Dunno why everyone keeps suggesting a replacement bumper. It looks like it’s popped back into shape nicely (like it’s supposed to) and just needs to be repainted.
As for the body, that doesn’t look too hard to repair, even at home. Remove the light and “massage” the protruding section (with a hammer first, then a metal file) so that it’s flush with the bodyline, then apply thin layers of body filler to restore the correct shape and smooth it all out. Sand, prime and paint.

So familiar that you would overlook a huge chunk of the unibody being bashed in?

Some of the scratches on the bumper are quite deep so I can't just repaint it.

Before you replace it, talk to a plastic bumper repairer. A panelbeater will know one if you can't find one. You'll be amazed what these guys can do, deep scratches are not a problem. Unless you fluke it and find a bumper the same colour for sale, it may be cheaper to repair and paint it rather than replace it and have to change the colour. Always investigate your options!

Hey guys, i wouldn't mind trying the work myself. What do I fill the scratches with on the bumper? bondo work fine on the plastic? What about painting it? What's the process involved so it doesn't just peel off?
