Best place for coolent temperature probe?

Best place for coolent temperature probe?

I'm giving thought to installing an Autometer Coolent temperature gauge. Where would be the logical place to attach the probe?

I think a lot of people put them in the stock location. I think you can even thread it into the hole although the threads are metric and not 1/8"NPT so it'll will be crossthreaded but it works. I'm adding one to mine right now. I'm thinking of drilling one of the airpump holes bigger and threading it. It's the one next to the waterpump pulley. I'm not sure if it's all hollow behind there though. Anyone know?

Somebody had a unique(to me anyway) way of doing that. He installed a pipe between the radiator and the water pump. The pipe had a *bung* on it that was tapped for whatever size threads were needed. Maybe that is not to clear. It would be: radiator with a short hose attached, then the short pipe with the bung, then another short hose that connects to the water pump. I think teamfc3s.org was thinking about manufacturing something like this and he was taking a poll for people that were interested.

I believe GReddy sells those radiator hose "adapters".

All you need to do is cut your existing upper radiator hose, insert the adapter, and reclamp the ends.&nbsp The temp sensor threads right into the other hole.&nbsp Mind you, this is made specifically for the GReddy temp sensor, so it might not fit the Autometer temp sensor the original poster was asking about.

the only problem with mounting the gauge into the rad hose is if the thermostat sticks closed. your engine will be overheating but the temp gauge will show fine. you are better off to get it between the engine and thermostat.

I've heard putting the probe in the water pump housing is the best place. I suppose you could take the pump off, tap into the pipe that leads to the thermostat and call it a day. Make sure you use a new gasket.

I put mine in the water pump housing. I didn't remove the housing. I had a very powerful vacuum cleaner in the hole the thermostat goes to suck the metal shavings.

The housing with the radiator cap has a *boss* on it where a cooling fan temp sensor goes on some cars. Mine had no cooling sensor, just a boss. I drilled into the boss and tapped threads for the aftermarket unit. Yes, I know its after the thermostat. Poses no problem for me. I realize it could possibly be a problem, but for me unlikely. I still have the stock gauge working and I figure that will peg out if there is a problem. Anyway HENRX7'S looks pretty neat. To me anyway. I'm going to make me one of those pipe with bung outfits and try that out for fun.
