In my opinion, boutique oils are a waste of money on the street.

Save the fancy stuff for the transmission and differential where it will actually make a difference.

I use whatever engine is oil is on sale when I change it.

Synthetic is fine for the engine if you want to pay for it.

 

Why do so many of you run such heavy oil, 20w50?

 

because especially in turbos oil does shear a bit (or can) and its all about protection..

 

I always use GTX in all of my cars. It goes on sale periodically (for example, right now at Advance Auto Parts - 7.99 for a gallon). Whenever I see it on sale I just pick up enough for my next oil change in each of my cars.

what type of certificate, and is there an actual write up on this oil in relation to mazdas specifically? dont they aprove the use of any brand as long as the weight and other specs are w/in tolerances.....

 

I have a paper signed by Mazda Corp that approves ELF Synthetic oil for use in rotaries..

Until recently Mazda has always said to not use synthetic oil in rotaries. However ELF synthetic oil is approved.

I use Castrol GTX 20W50 year round in the Turbo and 10W30 or 20W50 depending on the weather in the Vert since it's my daily driver.

 

Royal Purple? Gross! Use it for the long term if you like sludge.

 

the biggest thing about Royal Purple is if you watch there "hp gain video" they do a test with a car get its numbers and drain the OLD DIRTY SLUDGY gear oil, trans oil and engine oil out and then put in NEW CLEAN royal purple in all 3 components.. well hell if you change all the fluid and put in ANYTHING new you will get less friction and better numbers...

Atleast with ELF there is no promises just good quality oil

Now me and a guy I work with have been checking gas mileage.. he was averaging 24-26 miles with castrol syntec.. after he switched he noticed he gained 4-5 mpg

I personally went from 14mpg to 19mpg after switching obviously this was not sudden it was in a cumlitive of about 1000 miles before I checked and I noticed I gained 4-5 mpg...

Yu do get better gas mileage with this oil we have customers who also have noticed a difference.

besides either way it is OIL (not purple gimik) it is Synthetic and next to that all u gain is benifits nothing to loose and it is cheaper then almost any other Synthetic oil.

FAAAAAQ. I'm seeing a lot of major bull here. Just go with a synthetic listed int the FAQ or an API certified conventional oil. API certified conventional oil is better for most people. Go 10w30 or 20w50 depending on region (see FAQ), though you can use either in most areas. For heavy track use go with any of the synthetics listed, though preferably Idemitsu, Neo, Redline or Royal Purple. Lots of reviewers have confirmed RP's HP claim, but it's only 2%. Oil isn't really the place to be looking for performance.

 

I think that is mostly because 99% of the people who drive sports cars have absolutely no need for oil that exceeds the manufacturer-recommended API category. Therefore, you get a lot of people talking smack about which oil is the best when it actually doesn't matter a hill of beans and they are needlessly emptying their wallets for nothing.

I thought it was a minimum of 30% in the US?

Anyway, I guess I don't follow the logic. The Group III base stock used in Elf is highly-refined petroleum, which is NOT actually synthetic except under the silly U.S. marketing rules. Actual synthetic oil (synthesized rather than refined) is Group IV or V. Therefore, I don't see how a French Group III/IV blend is supposed to be better than a Group IV or V oil from the U.S. or any other country if the only criteria is which oil is "more synthetic". I am not saying that Elf is bad, just that it sounds to me like the kettle calling the pot black.

Mazda is pushing their Dexelia Ultra 5W-30, which I'm sure is in no way like any of the Total products.

The normal burn-off is only about 1 qt per 3,000 miles, so a turbocharged car driven hard on the street would need an oil change right about the time it needs to be topped-off with a quart of oil, so there really isn't much point in topping it off. If you don't drive your TII hard, or if you have a non-turbo car, then you can see the service manual for longer oil change intervals which will save you time and money.

There is a reason why so many people use Castrol GTX. Also, use of distilled water in the coolant mix as per the service manual will also help keep the engine clean.

 

2-stroke = best oil? OMP->2-stroke injection conversion and now you have oil injected that has good lubrication and is meant to be burned?

ELF oil has a basestock 4 with basestock 5 added...

US Spec synthetic oil is a Basestock 3 with only up to 18% base stock 4

Mazda recomend the Dexelia Ultra 5w30 (MADE BY ELF)

Elf US spec is the SXR 5W30.. the Dexelia is a EURO spec oil... Finding it over here in the US is tough..

SXR 5W30 ELF/Total is what is recomended for US spec.

 

i also use castrol gtx 10w30 cuz the previous owner had enough bottles hiding around the car for a complete oil change..btw use mazda oil filters (short stock)

That oil has been around for some time and alot of Mitsubishi DSM guys have been using it for a long period of time....

It is good stuff but not the ONLY synthetic oil for Rotaries and it was not made for rotaries only..
