I`ve got a 86 rx7 that sat for a while, pulled tranny ( 5 speed ) due to unable to get it in 1st and second, plus pressure plate is really wore out, almost into rivets. It seems that there should be an easy way to check the tranny with it out, and if 1st and second is bad is there a partial rebuild solution?

You can remove the tail housing to check out the shift rods. See if you can push/pull the 1st/2nd gear rod into gear. You can replace only certain parts during a rebuild, but it's not a simple process. Rebuilding a transmission requires special tools and a lot of resourcefulness to track down the parts you'll need. For all the time and money you'll put into it, you can just buy a used transmission for a fraction of the price.

at this point best bet is either get a local shop, but not a franchise type of deal. rather a mom and pop type of shop and have them rebuild it or buy a used one. unless you have a bit of money to waste i wouldnt try this myself
