Question Battery re-location..........

Ok guys I wanted to ask some questions about this topic for a while now. Is it ok to relocate a non-sealed battery or should I go with an optima? If so which would be best for this application a red top or yellow top? I have already sent away for an FD alternator so I should have adequate charging with it From what I know 88integrals has done this with a custom FG box build in the passenger side bin. Unfortunatly I beleive he still has me on his ignore list so he probably won't respond to this. :-/

Where would be the easiest concealed place to rount the cables through? Would I need to put in a fuse in the new cables? How many AMP rating on the fuse?

Also I have seen a mini battery kit for the FD on rotaryextreme could I use one of these little batteries? I am guessing it weighs a lot less and is easier to mount/re-locate.

Would ALL optima batteries have the same amperes? I have never seen their power ratings either on their site.

Santiago

PS- Thanks for your help in advance.

I've had half the stuff in my garage for some time now, but other projects took precedence.

It would be best to only put a sealed battery inside the car. But if you do any type of racing where going through tech is by the letter of the rule, it will still have to be inside a sealed and vented box. I bought a SPA battery box from Pegasus Racing.

A Red Top should do just fine, unless you have a boomin' stereo you run with the car off, in which case you should get a yellow. A 200A circuit breaker is recommended. I plan on using 2 gauge wire from battery to starter, 4 from starter to alternator, and 6 from alternator to main fuse.

Scott has a good write-up: http://www.1300cc.com/howto/how2/frontend/phase1.htm

EDIT

A few more things. Always make sure to have good grounds. Scrape away paint and primer neatly, ground it tight, then cover it with di-electric grease.

A lot of people relocate batteries, but not as many go to great lengths such as some of us, who make sure the alternators are up to snuff, use proper size wire, etc.

When doing any splices, either use an impact crimper or solder. Better yet both.

Well I was going to answer but Jerry pretty much took care of everything. Check companies like Jegs. they sell complete sealed battery relocation kits with everything needed.

Those are definitely the easiest. My problem was I couldn't find a kit that had a box small enough to fit in the bins. I'd like to keep the battery out of the way.

The SPA box I got from Pegasus fits great. When it's finally mounted it might be just a bit too high for the lid to close (by my rough approximation), but I can fix that easy with a shim or two.

Bulk wire is super cheap at Lowe's or Home Depot. I paid about $30 for enough wire to do about two battery relocations. I like to have extra just in case.

JerryLH3 - Thanks man! does that company have a link or a pic of the box you purchased? What kind of places have 200A circuit breakers?

It's $80, which is kind of steep, until you look at the prcie of some of Summit's prebuilt boxes.

Stereo shops. There are a few places on the net you can order them for ~40 bucks. Most of the main stream places here didnt have what I wanted (probably did but the people had no clue wtf I was looking for), or wanted a stupid price for it.

If you do pretty much any type of racing youll have to install an external (accessable from outside the car...) master cut off switch.
