(I cant tell if you guys are being sarcastic or not... )

I do not like it, every time I shift it sounds like my exaust exploded. Some red neck sitting in the seat next to me trying to shoot clay pigeons. Im not 100% sure if I have a cat, or just a cat shell around my exaust, but if there are no other options to stop this really ghetto sounding backfire, im going to have to take the air pump back off. I dont think I will mess w/ the tps, or the mixture setting because frankly that scares me.

*mood* disappointed

(quick question, stock the 88 gtu backfired if you let off above 5k? how did they sell?)

because when they were brand new, all the emiisions running good, etc, the problem was not half as bad..... get a turbo and see how bad it backfires. Also, if you don't either get used to it, or fix it (as in spending 800+ dolloars for an ems) then imo this car isnt for you.

BTW: to me it sounds like you need to do more research and learn more about these cars before you do anything. To me it sounds like you have a vac leak....i had one, it was so bad my car lost power and backfired, and i had to stop because i couldnt get anywhere (and thats really bad on a freeway).

I messed with the tps screw, screwed it in 3 turnes and it made the car feel like it lost power. Screwed it out 3 turns from stock and it felt a little touchy.... still both backfired.

DO NOT MESS WITH ANY ADJUSTMENTS IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY ARE FOR OR HOW TO ADJUST THEM! Also do not advise other people to do the same.

NEVER touch the AFM adjustment.

If the car is backfiring excessivly, it is out of tune. A full tuneup and checkup of the emissions system will help a lot. But it can only be fixed so much. The stock EFI system is old and laggy compared to new systems so a momentary rich condition is created when the throttle closes. The stock exhaust absorbs this into the cats and opens air passages into the exhaust manifold to help burn excess fuel. Check the operation of the ACV valve and associated solenoids, make sure all sensors are in spec, get the TPS adjusted PROPERLY, etc. etc.
