Automatic Transmission conversion
Okay, so I have to convert my car from a 5 speed to a 4 speed auto. And I need to do it ASAP! What parts am I going to need and does anybody have an idea of how much it's going to cost me? Also, if you have these parts or know's a place where I can get this stuff, please tell me! I need this done right away. Thanks for your help!

I just have to get it done almost immediatly, it sucks but I have to ditch the 5 speed because I just recently got the car, and I don't have time to learn how to drive a 5 speed because I have to drive from New Orleans, where my dad is, all the way back up to Syracuse by the end of the week to get back to school. I bought the car in New Orleans, it was a GREAT deal, the car is flawless. I can't drive a 5 speed for **** and I don't have to time to sit back and learn. I already have somebody who can install it and make sure its right for practically free, I just have to get the parts to convert it. Please help me with my info please guys! I appreciate any help I can get on this.

You better spend the next 4 days getting acquainted with the 5 speed because even if you were to put an auto in the car (dumb idea) it certainly wouldn't be done by the end of the week.

My problem is I can't launch from a stop in first gear, I keep stalling, sometimes I'll get it right, and sometimes I wont, its like a chance thing. And I have no idea how good the 5 speed will be in the coldness and the snow for when I get back up to NY.

heh... trust me.. the 4 days to learn the 5speed is well worth the 2-4 weeks it will take accumulating the auto parts. But if you're really that interested, I've got the full line of s5 auto driveline parts less the tranny. We.. I've got two autos that are blown.
Good luck, but if you can't learn to drive a 5speed, I don't care to be on the same road as you if you're driving an rx-7. Because if you can't grasp the 5speed idea... wtf will you do when the back end kicks out?
Oh well, each his own. Peace if you need any help let me know, I've gotten pretty aqauinted with all this auto tranny bs.

I would just keep trying to learn. Take it easy and concentrate on what you're doing. Who cares if you grind the **** out of it, you're already planning on replacing it.
See if the person willing to do the work for you would take the time that he would be working on it to teach you how to drive the stick instead.

Its not that I grind it, actually thats the easiest part of the whole thing for me to row through the gears, its just that I let out of the clutch way too fast, and I have to try really hard to concetrate on to let it out slowly. I can practice with someone all day tomarrow who can help me, I'll see what happens then.

Wow.... never thought I'd see the day. Driving a stick isn't that hard. Anyone with 2 functioning legs and arms can learn. Save yourself alot of time money and respect (from this forum at the least) and spend a day learning. It won't take any longer than that.

It took me 2 tries to learn to drive stick, just let the clutch out slow and give it all little gas. If you have to time to sit and type you have the time to learn, but if you want, send me all your 5speed stuff and I will send you all my automatic, I'm dying to get rid of it!

i bet you're right biased... like the right side of you has more muscle and agility (no jokes). Happens, sometimes to the point where you have a limp from having a left leg not so muscular. For the first time in your life you may have to be controlling your left ankle. Its a new feel for someone who has never used it for driving. Once you train your left ankle and foot to behave and resond the way your right foot already does... you've got it down. Just remember to let it out slowly, and put the gas on slowly at the same time.

Don't worry, I'm in the same ballpark as you are. My 10Ae is my first stick and it takes practice to getting good at it. I'm still no good at taking off from facing up hills. But the truth it having a 5-speed is so much more fun than an AT. You're in control of the car so much it's awesome. It takes time, I've been driving it for a week and I still have trouble rev-matching. Don't get discouraged!

hmm.. heh well learning on an rx7 means you're going to have some pretty wicked launches first time you drive another 5spd. But if huge catipliars had 5speeds, at least we know we could start from rest on a hill and take off damn smooth
