Just bought a 91 Automatic Mazda RX7. Only thing that would make it better is if it were manual. My question is, is an 86 automatic transmission compatable with a 91? What transmissions are? Pls help. I need car for work and school, and my transmission is starting to go. Thank you.

Indy, no sweat....They're are plenty of us here to try and help if need be. I just have no idea about the compatibility.... I think if you're going to do this Auto for Auto swap anyway, then you should be able to go a little further and get the manual instead.

why not use your 86 tranny case, and put ford c4 guts in it? talk to mazda trix about it b4 you do it but they seam to like doing that and they thought i was cheaper.. anyway, if you dont like driving a stick every day of your life you might wana check that out.

not sure if they are compatible. Doubt it though. I do know they are not the same. The 90 has electronic controls the 86 has mechanical so I doubt it will plug into the wiring harness correctly.

there are diffrences between the s4(86-88) and the s5(89-91) not only are the ecu's diffrent but all the conectors for the tranny be it auto or manual are diffrent. so you would need to find the tranny for your series. but i would opt for the manual conversion my self. i like having something else to do while driving not to mention it gives me better control of the car.

haha, good decision. I just called RoninAutoBox today between classes, and got a few minutes to bs with him about the differences in the car after doing the swap. Sounds like he really enjoys it. Its costing me quite a bit to do the tranny swap, but I think thats beceause I'm kinda overhauling everything thats not internal engine, at the same time.
I'm probably somwhere around $800 dollars right now. Another $200 and it will be done. Interestingly enough, you could probably do it for less than $500 if you plan it out, unlike I did.
But... if you do it like me, and have had three months to work on your car while its on blocks, its amazing how much cleaner you can get the engine bay. I finaly got the chance to rip out all that useless A/c stuff, throw the rats nest out the window, run new fuel lines, all new vac lines, and new collant lines. Also threw on a double pulley and all new belts and gaskets.
Also cleaned up the intake manifolds so they aren't covered in black ****, and flushed the insides out the best I could. got new sparkplugs. new oil filter and oil pan gasket, so the oil pan gets cleaned out.
All i think I will have left is the tranny pan gasket and rear dif gasket/fluid.
next time it will be down for this long will be to completely overhaul the brakes (again) with new/rebuilt calipers repacked hubs/bearings and new crossdrilled rotors.
But... i really need a job first, lol. Savings is out the window
