automatic tranny to 5 spd. i need suggestions and help....
ok, ive got a 1991 n/a with an automatic tranny in it and i need to put a 5spd. in it badly. ive got a 88' 5spd. tranny already, will the 88' tranny bolt right up? also can i use the ecu off the 88' tranny to put on my 91 when i put the 5 spd. in? another thing can anyone give any suggestions on doing the clutch pedal, and if i take everything off the 88' to put on the 91' will it all work or do i need to find a 89'-91' tranny instead....???? please help!!!!!!

Ok, I'm working on doing the same setup. You'll need the following
1) Clutch pedal/brake assembly
2) slave cylinder
3) piping that goes from the slave cylinder to the release cylinder
4) release cylinder
5) wiring harness that plugs into the transmission
6) change the mounts
7) get a different drive shaft
8) get a different rear end, autos are 3.9 5 speeds are 4.3
9) crapload of beers/band-aids/and a vast vocabulary of curses

Most standard rear ends are 4.10:1, not 4.30:1. Only the rare GTUs had the 4.30:1 rear end gears.
What about a flywheel and a clutch assembly, lol? flywheel counterweight too.
wiring harness should be the same, it should attach to the tranny. No swapping should be necessary.
starter too, I believe.
Standard driveshaft whould boolt up to your read end, but you would be better with the steeper gears.
Ecu should work fine.
Try:
-Tranny
-driveshaft
-Pedal assembly, cultch master cylinder, piping, slave cylinder
-flywheel, counterweight, starter
-Shift fork, TOB, and a pilot seal.
at a minimum. For all that work, swap in a TII drive train. all the same parts are necessary, and you get higher endurance results.

So far, I've found the driveshaft to be short, so I just used a T2 shaft instead, I was assuming he knew he needed the clutch/etc, and also, the wiring harness is different, it doesn't work on my car at least.

Actually you do need a new drive shaft.. I did the conversion myself and the automatic one has different teeth that lock in ... plus the auto one is a little shorter, because the transmission is longer i believe or the other way around i dont remember but they are different. Also you will need to get custom mounts fabricated to hold the transmission up because the stock mounts wont line up... I had mine done for about 85 bucks canadian... other than that it was a total breeze.. and worth it...
