I got mine fixed for free. A month later the driverside stopped working all together.
I took it back in and asked them to fix it... again. After 4 hours the young tech comes up to me and tells me that my aftermarket wiring is causing the problem, and that one of the stock wires is way otu fo range for ohms. I had afternarjet door speakers and had never touched the stock wiring harness. Nothing I had done could have possibly messed the wiring.
The kid obviously thought he knew what he was talking about and was going to talk me over. I asked him to mark the bad wiring harness. He procrastinated until his boss told him to do it.
I took the car home (unfixed of course) and ripped the interior apart to find a screw /plastic mount/ of the motor unit broke off and allowed the cable to reseed back towards the hatch, and clearly away from its rail.
I took the car back with the interior removed to show him the problem, he looked at me and told me that i broke the screw mount on purpose.
nice.
Anyhow, since they weren't going to honor the waranty, calling it my fault, I ziptied the screwmount back together, and its been working ever since. That was last year.
Pooh on mazda.
Fortunately the mazda franchise moved to a different dealer intown where the techs arent' nearly as incompetent or big headed.

If you consider letting some random lunk work on your car "Free."
Every time I have to leave my RX-7 with somone (like the time I had it inspected) It scares the hell out of me. I _HATE_ letting anyone else work on it unless I'm standing over them.
Anyway, the S5 'verts didnt have those auto belts

I'm going to have to deal with this problem mighty soon and I've done my research. I even have a copy of the originalrecall forms they sent out to owners saying that the repairs of the seat belt mechanism for all 89-91, I believe, is warranteed for life. However, that did not stop the lady at the CERTIFIED, AUTHORIZED, SISSYFIED, Mazda dealer from trying to tell me that "the recall is over and they won't do the work."
Austin:I know the recall is over, it was in '96. The parts and mech's have a lifetime warranty.
Lady:What year is your car again?
Austin:90
Lady:We don't work on those anymore. We haven't had any RX-7's in her for years.
Austin: I need to verify the make of my vehicle. Are all RX-7's Mazdas?
Lady: Yes
Austin: Are You a certified Mazda dealer?
Lady: Yes
Austin: You have to do whatever Mazda says and honor all valid warrantees?
Lady:Yes
Austin: THEN FIX MY f*CKING CAR!!!!
**I made up that last bit, it's only what I wanted to say**
To summarize, Mazda doesn't actualy wan't to fix these and now I get some bullshit that I nedd to have the car inspected to determine if my problemfalls in the waranty catagory. DUH. My damn wire is sticking out. They they nedd to order parts. Then they need to do the work on a car some of their tech's have prolly never even seen.
Oh, BTW, if they make up some reason why it doesn't fit with the warranty, guess who foots the diagnosis bill. I hate Mazda. They make great cars but totaly flopped when developing any sort of service dept.
I can just see it now, they'll do more damage to my car than good. I hope I can just pass inspections with the belt cranked back wth a hex key. I'm not even sure that'll work either. I know I need a restraining seatbelt to pass. UGH!!!!

There has to be some "authority" to call and complain about the Mazda dealer in your area. If I were you, Id research it thoroughly and see what can be done.

I took mine in to be fixed recently (the drivers side) and the dealer said the fix had been done back in 1997 from one of the previous owners, so they dont have to do it again....
Sooo I guess Ill end up fixing it on my own some day.....
Pretty weak on their part if you ask me...

Sometimes you just luck out like that, while others of us live in cities where they dont know a dang thing about our cars.

Find the 1-800 Mazda customer service number and tell them your story. They should tell you that the dealer still has to fix it. If not, it's worth mentioning yet again that the seatbelt is a safety device.
Here's the number for Mazda USA customer service: 1-800-222-5500

well fellas, Mazda fixed my seatbeat and my thingy isn't sticking out anymore. They had no problem fixing it and wanted to fix the drivers side but it was working fine. But they did tell me, if I had even one time the drivers belt hangs up they will still fix it under the recall. I know all these guys at mazda, maybe that had something to do with my curtious service, but I really don't think so. If they didn't want to fix it, they wouldn't have. But the bottom line is, the recall is still valid and always will be. Even if the pass. side goes out again, they will still fix it. Thanx guys
