Auto parts store K&N clones?
Does anyone think these AutoZone/PepBoys specials are worth bothering with? I happened to see these in the "performance"(rice) section. They are oiled cotton, and on the back it shows a close comparison(which I'm sure isn't biased in any way ) with a mysterious "K" brand.

They are a little cheaper than the K&N filters of the same size. Spectre even makes their version of a K&N recharger kit!

Or do you think a paper filter does just as well?

cone filters are only worth it if you build a cold airbox for it. otherwise they suck hot air from ur radiator. i noticed that when i reinstalled my stock airbox my idle went up about 300rpms. i think this was also when i had a vac leak but the point still stands for me at least.

The price difference at PepBoys was around $50.
I'm not really asking if I should buy it, but if anyone thinks they are worth a s--- , just for future reference.
And of course, always use a cold air box.

Check this out, http://www.mkiv.com/techarticles/filters_test/2/ there really no point in getting a cheap filter, keep the stock one or get a good aftermarket one, you still want it to filter well and breath even better. I chose the Apexi Power Intake, hope that helps.

I've been reading really good things about those green filters. greenfiltersusa.com, I think. SportsCar magazine was doing some comparison tests of drop-ins and other stock class allowed mods, and the green filter actually picked up like 5 horsepower on the dyno, whereas the K&N only picked up 2. This was on an RX-8, btw.
The price is supposed to be about the same, so that HP gain is worth looking into.

Yeah, search on here for "cold air box", "custom air box" etc...
There are some pretty good home made designs. I'm still in the process of making one. It probably won't look pretty, but it will serve it's purpose.
I even considered using a stock airbox from another vehicle that has a large design.

It sucks there's no kit for the apexi power intake on 86-88. According to this site that George84 posted: http://www.mkiv.com/techarticles/filters_test/2/ ... The apexi is #1 .... They only make the apexi for 89-91.

While working at auto-zone, I don't recommend the performance section to be used by anyone other than if you have an old Chevy Small-block 350. An intake can be anything from heating duct to aluminum. Just make sure it is of size and doesn't leak. BTW, heating duct I think works well to make your own cold-air intake.

Honestly depending on what you are planning on doing with the car it may or may not make a difference. If you are planning to use the car as a daily driver no but if you plan to play around with the car you may want to investigate different filter systems. I use a cheap $20 filter over a K&N because right now all I can afford is to use my car as a daily driver. I get good gas mileage and have no problems.
