Auto not shifting

87 GSL will not shift up just revs out 1st gear , reverse works fine . Any ideas where to start ?

seriously though,do the Auto Trans have HOLD on them?..to lock the Gear in?.

Nice , I have everything I need to swap it over to a manual but I'm trying to figure out how to daily this auto till winter when I drop my s5 tII motor and tranny into it .

it's definitely an electric problem but where to look the modulator valve , or in the actual transmission

i dont know a whole lot about trans but id have to imagine it would be a modulator valve, solenoid or something along those lines. but i dont know a whole lot about autos

Vacuum modulator has a vacuum hose to it and it should be bolted on to the driver's side of the transmission.

Mazdatrix has a pic of the item itself.

That trans is not electronicly operated, the only electronic part of it is the lock up in the torque converter. 2nd gear engages when the band engages(I think), could be the band or the piston that actuates the band. Either way, it is usually not a simple fix, it will have to be torn down.
