Auto-cross wheels/tires
I have an S4 with 14" phone dials. I might be able to get my hands on another working S4 with phone dials, and another spare engine. My question is this:
Since the Phone Dials are so light (13.5lbs), wouldn't these be the preferred wheel, as opposed to the balony slicer GXL's (they're 17lbs i think)? Or are the tire walls going to flex too much under heavy corning? The 15's are also wider than the 14's, does this bigger friction footprint make up for the heavy weight?
Since there is more rubber on a 14, than a 15 or 16, is that alot of weight to consider?
I have toyed with the idea of doing a 5-lug conversion, and trying to get vert wheels since they weigh 11lbs. But that's for a time when I have more money to throw around.

one problem you might with the 14inch wheel is that it might be too narrow for any higher performance tires or you wont be able to put too wide of a tire on it. And they are super ugly which reduce a lot of hp!

If your going to run in a stock class the most economical way to go faster is another set of stock rims with some R-Compound tires on them. There are some great 14" autocross tires available. Hoosier makes 3 different 14" tires. Falken makes a pretty good tire for everday driving thats a great price.

Rotational weight does make a difference, how much? somebody else will have to answer the exact, as I don't know. But I am in search of Tire info as well so some "good" answers would be appreciated.

And I don't think anyone said GXL's weren't 15". I questioned whether they were 17 lbs. lbs. meaning pounds, as in the weight measurement.

Autocrossing -> What class?
Aren't all the 15+ inchers five-lugs?
If it's stock, you pretty much have to stick to stock size rims (check the race car tech forum for why this info is fairly fresh in my mind! :p )

Why would you say such a thing?? Let the guy mod the car however he wants.....when he wants.

Icemark has posted a info from an old SCC (I think) which indicated a rough relationship between unsprung weight and hp at the wheels. The tire rack lists weights of tires under "specs" for a particular brand and model of tire.
I was in Mankato about a year and a half ago for 3 weeks. I didn't see a single FC on the road, but there was a FB for sale at a small dealership at the intersection of the the main drag on the river and the road that goes up the hill to all the stores, etc.

Stick with the phone dials and just get some R compound tires.
Changing the wheels you risk getting bumped into other classes.
14 inch wheels are fine as far as sidwall flex, I see a lot of people use them in autocross.

Snrub= No worries
Remember the cool thing about fixing up a car is that you really "don't" have to race it. You can still feel good about what you did to the car and be the worst driver in your state/province. That's the angle I was taking.
