Man you know what this problem sounds like to me..........It sounds like you have a loose clamp on the intercooler piping. it runs good until it gets to a certain abmount of boost where it then leaks around the hose/fitting or whatever......then it falls on its face. This could/would contribute to an unstable idle as well.
With the Stock intercooler it is hard for the pipes to come all the way off and could reset back into position until you hit boost again. Check all lines and Hoses.

yeah thanks I thought of that. I put new clamps on those offshoots above the turbo, but my hoses before and after the intercooler may be leaking a bit. I did go over them all and really tightened them, which helped, but the problem persited, just to a lesser extent afterward.
The mechanic has yet to look at it again. It's been 2 weeks now he's had it. He said since it's running OK it's not a priority. "These things take time" he says.
I'm ready to grab my car back and tell him to **** off. It shouldn't sit in the cold. Problem is he's the only reputable rotary mechanic in my area.

OK, haven't driven it yet, but mechanic says it's fixed.
This is what he said was wrong. Make sense?
He said the air/fuel was adjusted to full rich, which prevented him from accurately setting the timing, he said after he adjusted the a/f a few times he could set the timing, and that was it. We'll see.
I can't really test it cause it's snowing here today.
I'll post after test drive.

That doesn't make all that much sense....unless the rich condition caused it to idle too high? If that was the case, then the base timing couldn't be set correctly. He would need to bring the idle down to the factory spec to set the timing.

he said something like the rich condition caused the bad idle, which prevented a proper timing set. Anyway, he adjusted the air fuel leaner, and set timing and idle a couple of times...fixed a couple vacume leaks also.
It ran perfect last night, very smooth with the right induction sound - no rushing air, just that rotary "drone" sound. I thought I could actually hear my K&N for the first time. Good spool up and no hesitation. Only time will tell if it stays consistent.
So a happy ending if anyone is still reading this dusty thread. $150. CDN not bad, considering they gave the engine a once over and found 2 vac leaks I didn't know about, and found and fixed a problem I wouldn't have thought of.
So my motor is now done the way I want it - tuned, fast & reliable without mods, & braced to the body. Now on to suspension........
thanks for your input guys, this board is invaluable.
