OK I just came from the dealer. First of all I gotta say its really stupid how they all run out of the building to tell you that you need a VIN number to order anything. i almost got into an argument with the guy behind the counter because he obviously thought that in 1987 mazda made 40 different turbo rotary engines when they actually made only one.

Anyways, I would like to get a new engine for my 87 tII. It runs great and never overheated or anything, but I would just like to swap it out before its gone.

Mazda wants $1936 for the remanufactured engine, plus 1000 on the spot for the core. You dont get the 1000 back until Mazda rips the core apart and says that it is OK. This would really suck if my motor blew cause thats an extra grand.

I also tried asking them what exactly a remaned engine is, what parts are new and what are used and they really didnt seem to know anything except "New oil and coolant seals". Im just guessing the dealership hasnt got a clue.

They also do not have a clue as to what accessories and components will come with the engine. I am most concerned with the flywheel, front cover, and waterpump but it would be nice if I got more, like the motor mounts. The dealer has no idea what comes with their motors so they told me it would be "long block" but Im not that gullible. Also anything that comes with the remanned motor I MUST give back with my core engine.

Its like Fort Knox over here man. Can anyone tell me if A - Cores get "checked", B - Remaned motor use what new and old, and C - What comes with a remaned engine (flywheel, front cover)

At least the warrantee is 12m unlimited milege.

Remanufactured means that they took a used engine and rebuilt it to factory specs, using new parts on anything that needed it. Then they reassembled it using factory methods.

These generally come only as the short block, with no accessories, OMP, intake, or exhaust parts. So I am surprised that they are claiming long block. If it really is a long block that would explain why he needed the VIN, as in 87 they made some changes through to the 88 production.

The core thing is pretty common. The core inspection will pop it open and check for wear on the chambers and end plates. I doubt the dealer will do that however.

My engine was FUCKED (rotor unusable, housing scored). Got a reman from Mazda for $1600 (employee discount). YES i had to leave a $1k core charge deposit. But as soon as I arrived with my engine, they refunded it w/o checking or anything.

Reman engine comes with :
Flywheel
Front cover
Main pulley
Oil Pump
Water Pump
Thermostat
Oil Pan
Oil Strainer

My advice, keep the old engine until the new one arrives. Then take the new one home and check off everything that you'll need to keep/give. THEN take in your engine and get the $1000 back .

Mine was "longblock" and they needed a VIN too.

Don't forget to order a gasket set

That is excelent news on what is offered from a remaned engine. I was expecting to buy things like a new water pump and thermostat housing. guess I can sctartch that off the list.

How many gaskets will I need? I am thinking engine to exhaust man, engine to intake, lower to upper intake, and maybe a few oil line/coolant line gaskets. Does that sound right? Does the bellhousing have a gasket?

I guess I need buy gaskets, clutch kit, and 3 hard oil lines.

Are remaned motors run tested before delivered?

They sell a "Gasket Set - Engine" (part name) for this purpose. I bought if for like $20-$30 and it had all the gaskets I needed, no more, no less.

The bellhousing doesn't have a gasket.

You may want to replace your oil injector lines too.

Yes, the reman motors are test run before being sold.
