kbb is crap unless youre dealing with insurance companies or dealerships to trade it in. my 89 gtu was valued at $3300 in fair condition, no luck finding a buyer though. i ended up selling it for $2000. not bad cause i bought it for $1000 
for those with T2s wait just a lil bit longer and u'll probably get offers at $5-$6k (FF3 tax). i now have a miata and ^ you should get one, its underpowered but has rediculously good handling. drop teh rotary in it and you'll feel right at home.
edit: in the end, it all is deterimined by where you live, the amount of rx7s available (supply), and how much people wanna pay for a 16-20 year old car (demand).

I paid $4.5k for my GXL, but the condition of the body (no rust anywhere, excellent paint), interior, the low miles and the fact that it was at a stealership are all why. That and i've literally seen 2 FC's so far this year in an area of 40k+ people. It takes me both hands to count that number of MKI MR2's, and i still need to use toes.
Now if only my MKI MR2's were worth more than $800 that KBB lists them as being worth.

HOLY RUSTED METAL BATMAN!!!!! I checked the value of my '88 GXL when I bought it in Aug. last year and it was around $1,000. Now it says it's worth almost 3,000 in "good" condition! And I have 199,000 on the Odo!

Dude asked me today if I was selling my GXL. I said not unless you have five grand. Probably still wouldn't have sold if he did. (It's impossible to find a 7 around here other than overpriced shitty SEs.)

Wow, according to KBB a "good" condition 91NA is worth $4,605. A "good" 91 TII with 90K miles on it is $4,985. A "good" 91 vert with 90k miles is worth $6,045.

All vehicle values depreciate over time, except for some very rare exceptions such as the 1988 Mazda RX-7. Quality, popularity, changing tastes of the buying public, manufacturer incentives on new models and the economy itself all contribute to the depreciation and in some cases the appreciation of each individual make and model of vehicle.
So it's not a mistake. Our cars just happen to be worth more now...
