The exact numbers may be different, but the rules for rotary mixtures are exactly the same as for piston engines. The leaner you go, the more power you get, up to just before the point of detonation. You can lean out the very conservative factory mixtures (10:1 at full load!) to improve power while still maintaining a safety margin against detonation. Ask anyone who's had an S-AFC dyno-tuned.
The more gas you put in, the more boost you can add (working with the timming also of course).
Yeah, but the timing's being advanced, which is the wrong direction to head if you're adding boost.
The thing with that chip is that they say it adds 20hp when used with a filter and exhaust. I assume that means 20hp on top of the gains from the filter and exhaust. How can this be if the only change caused by the chip is richer mixtures (which should drop power) and a bit of ignition advance? It just doesn't add up...

Absolutley right timing advance is the wrong direction. I'm so glad I went turbo/carb with old distributor.

though advancing timing while monitering mixtures (safely) you can gain enormous amounts of power the stock mazda timing is very conservative for obvious reasons....I think that 20hp is reasonable, even advaning the timming and giving it a richer mixture may give you better gas milage aswell

Its the same chip that people have been selling for the N332, N333 and N327 which it won't work on.

Its a Japanese copy of the chip for the N340, which does have a speed limiter built in.

I'll send you one for free, if you have a N37X to try it in.

wrong, timing should back off as soon as boost peaks and gradually retard as rpms rise.

That would be correct for your year.

The differences are based on series and model.

For example the N332 ran the 87 T2
while the N333 ran the 88 T2

And the N338 ran the 88 'vert

all 3 of those are pretty much interchangeable, but remember the 88 used different injectors than the 87.

Reted would probably know for sure, but I would think that there would be minor differences in the maps as well.

Anyone?????

Sory to bring this post back from the dead, but noone actually gave a firm answear to all of this.

has anyone run one of these. What were there results????????????????

It almost seems like a whole bunch of people bought theses chips and didn't install them, as they were afraid they would blow something up. fair enough. But there must of been someone who can give us some feedback. I highly dought such a reputible company such as nightsports would of programmed there chips to advance timing. that doesn't make sense.

Increasing fuel and retarding timing when higher boost comes on makes perfect sense to me. This chip could just be a copy of the knightspeed ones (not hard to do with an eprom writer). Makes sense seeing that most of the ones on ebay say N374 (JDM ecu only).

I too have bought one, and am keen to install it if it retards timing. I can tune out all of the fuel issues with my safc anyway

Thanks

I have a N374 ecu in my S5, it doesn't have rev limit, the buzza still goes off. I've never fiddled with it and still has jap stickers on all the screws, so I don't think it has ever been cracked open.

I put one on my TII about 2 months ago and it pushed the boost on my stock turbo up to 12 psi before I blew my engine. I don't blame it on the chip though. the engine was on it's way out already. I should have known better.
It did run rich as hell though. and it did turn off that fuel cut and rev limiter too. Although I didn't get a chance to dyno I could feel the differance whether it be good or bad there was a horsepower gain.
