Anyone ever tried re-routing air filter to hood scoop?
88 TII. Someday I would like to get a front mount intercooler, but I'd hate to see that badass hood scoop go to waste (like the fake ones on new mustangs and subarus). I was wondering if anyone has thought about/tried/or actually re-routed the air filter to the hood scoop. Obviously it would have to be home-made, but I was thinking of fabricating a metal box that would mount to the original intercooler mounts and would fit the stock size K&N flat air filter. What are some opinions? Would this be worth it - horsepower wise? Think it might offer more horses than a cone filter?
thanks
thanks

The additional heat from routing the air over the top of the motor, and additional length also proves to be a greater restriction.
So in other words, bad idea that does not work to produce any HP, but rather serves to reduce HP.
This has also been tried and covered before please use the search function found in the upper right hand corner of this page before posting.

So what does the scoop on a subaru has to do with that ??? Subaru doesn't use any hood scoops for intake (no import manufacture does... too much chance of water getting to the filter).

the original poster meantioned the hood scoops on Mustangs and Subaru's being fake and calio64 was correcting him. Subaru uses top mount intercoolers as well. And to answer the original question, or rather to re-enforce Icemark's response, the hood duct will not aid you if its used for an intake. Just make a fiberglass cold air intake and leave the scoop because it looks badass.

i think he is refering to older imprezas that are non turbo yet still have a hood scoop...yea..not much purpose but i still believe they at least vent into the engine bay unlike mustangs whose scoop is covered by a plastic insert

Well, I'm sad to hear that the the idea doesn't work for any benefit, I thought it might be a fun project. As far as the hood scoops, I only made that comment because I have seen subarus and mustangs with hood scoops that were blocked off by plastic inserts. I wasn't aware that some models actually used them, so thanks for correcting me. I still think the ones that aren't functional are fundementally...retarded.

I agree.... but counting the idea out completely just because of a few assumptions is not in the best interest.
The only true way of finding out how it works is to build one and design a testing scheme and test it out.

I would be more inclined to try it on a nonturbo car that had either a carb or a standalone ecu. If something like a Weber DCOE were used and a box with filter fabbed up in front of it, the scoop could be a really nice way to run air into the engine. It wouldn't work as a ram air system though due to inadequate speeds but it would probably be a nice cold air system. Just shield the underside from heat from the engine. I wouldn't do it with a turbo though for already stated reasons. Too long of an intake routing system that would be pretty complicated.

Could you please aid me in locating the thread? I find the search engine on this site quite frustrating.
