No, you don't.

I just did mine today. It was a real pita until i got the rubber mallet an whacked the crap outta the screwdriver I was using to get it out.

Is it just a matter of pulling the drive shaft out and then removing the seal and replacing it?

ive only replaced mine while the tranny was out ...

its a no brainer with it out .. just remove and replace ...

Yes, you can just take the driveshaft out and pry the seal out of the end of the tailshaft.
