Just call me the triple post bandit! It kept freezing up so I stopped it and hit submit again.

I am certainly better at snow driving than in being patient. But we get a ton of snow from lake Michigan "lake effect". If the car can get enough traction to get through, I can handle the car. I drive 12 miles to work on mostly unplowed road, so snow is pretty much a 5 month thing for me. Salt? we use dirt up here. But your right about having to constantly wash it, this would drive me nuts as the car is black and is not allowed to be dirty. Ditto for the miata, although its standard red. So basically, it can be done. This is good to know, although I just got through doing donuts in a foot and a half of snow (check out the weather radar) in our culdesac in the alltrac. Its all too easy, with BF T/As on it. Are you sure that some of you want me to spend $ on the alltrac just to keep my fc beautiful for you to buy some day?

Those of you in snow country, what snow tires are you running? I keep reading they are getting better and better.

One last note, 8 years up here and no accidents or getting stranded. I have also pulled a full size van out of a ditch with a crx hf. Wish I had video.

Also, what size tires do you use?

In case it matters to some of you, if I don't put those 15 inch 91 base rims on the fc, there going on a minvan with summer tires.

I can also break the back end loose boosting in third on rain. But that was 45 series 17 inch tires.

it's not bad. I live in Maine and have no problem at all. The only places i have gotten stuck are in my own driveway and in my friends driveway. Other than that just drive slow, and don't over react to anything. The only trouble that i've had is taking off from a dead stop . that can be a bit time consuming but i make it. and do not run snow tires. i actually have performance oriented tires, one of which is bald, due to having a worn LSD but i make it just fine. was actually out and about today in a storm producing 14 inches. Note i was not driving in 14 inches of snow, i tend to stay on the road where they plow. . lol but yea you'll make it no problem. DON"T OVER REACT/CORRECT!!

What size?

Consumer reports recommended that tire.

I just looked at them and there the DS1's

205 60 15 on winter rims. They have actually held up really well. this is the 3rd winter and i should get 1 more out of them. The wet traction is ok but not the best. I find them good in deep and packed snow. The dry road traction is fair, the side walls are really soft and as the tire heats up the tire get quite soft but so do all winter tires. I think i have put on about 15000km maby more on them. oh and on the highway they are not as loud as lots of reviews tend to say. I would recommend them, i know when i have to replace the one i have now im going to get another set, maby the DS2's

I run Bridgestone Blizzaks on the Miata. I do believe every car I ever own will have a set of these if I get stuck living in a snowy area.. The trick is to get these on their own rims so you can quickly change into them as needed. Then you don't have to worry about running them down in the dry. maintained and not driven on too much dry tarmac, these things should last 5-8 seasons...

You can always afford a beater but you can't always afford to maintain it (or want to). Thats my dilemna.
