Anybody painted trim or mirrors black? What paint to use?

I was gonna repaint some s5 mirrors to match the s4 trim but didn't know what to get. I don't want to spray them flat black as it wouldn't really match. I saw this -> Trim Black <- but didn't know. Anybody recommend a good black trim looking paint for the mirrors?

get a satin paint. Just my opinion. Maybe a semi gloss.

trim black typically is a satin- to semi gloss

I've used the Dupli-Color satin trim black paint in a rattle can from the auto parts store before on my wiper arms. Have never tried it on mirrors, but I suppose it would work OK there. However in my experience, it will start to oxidize and turn flat after a few years so you'll need to re-do it. Maybe the Eastwood paint you linked to is higher quality, or maybe it's advisable to use a satin clearcoat on top (?)

eastwood is selling SEM, you can get this in detail and auto body supply places

anytime you have a finish other then gloss, and especially enamel out of a can, it will not stand up to the sun for too long. A simple scuff and a re-shoot and you will be ok again.
I have used my pyrometer on gloss and flat finishes and flat finishes absorb heat more then a gloss finish, gloss reflects the sun off it.
otherwise use a better paint, like a 2 part polyurethane, but you will need a spray gun, compressor, etc.

I purchased a can of spray black at a store that only sells car paint. worked fine, very flat, but faded after about a year. looked real good when fresh.

I use SEM brand on most trim parts like the wiper arms and grille under them. But when my black plastic mirrors started to look crazed I shot them with a good black primer, then shot them with a gloss automotive lacquer. Not to everyone's taste but I like the way they look. I wax them just like the rest of the paintwork. I painted them fifteen years ago and they still look great.

waldog- they would look like shiny mirrors!
when I first painted my vert I did the mirrors and all the trim gloss black with polyurethane, they did hold up great.

But you are no longer buying a $5.99 spray can and doing it in a few minutes.

Seeing the replies, I may just have the mirrors painted white like the car. Idk how they will look though being a s4. But I will give it a try. Better to have them professional in white, than rattle canned and not worth it in black.

Satin black looks great on wiper arms but would be eaten off the mirrors in no time at all.

If you want to make them look really good, then go to an autobody supply store that will sell you a spraycan of actual car paint (some one like Paint Circuit in Toronto and Barrie) and get them to mix it with flex addative in it. Use the full system primer, high build, basecoat and clear coat. Usually the stuff is $25 - $30 each can. The flax add will help with stome chipping and any flex the mirror makes, the clear will hold up to the uv, will last a long time. Not cheap, and it does take a little skill and time to do it good. just remember it is better to build up the paint is thin layers not one or two heavy sprays.

by the time you buy all that you can just have a shop paint them, they will come out great and if they have to do them twice you still pay once

Well, my father in law runs a shop, so I can get them sprayed cheap. I just didn't know if a bumper black would look better than white. The mirrors are blue now so they need painted something (black or white).

I'll just do them white like the car. They may look ok on a s4 despite all the black trim etc.

I think it'll look better white like the rest of the car, even though you have Black trim.

Average about $85/mirror. At least you know you're getting a good job. Doing it yourself is more for the experience.

doing it yourself with spray cans will be nothing more then air dry enamel, and in my opinion a waste of time for white, if your going to spray them white you can go single stage, but it will still be air dry enamel out of a can

You can get basecoat/clearcoat but might not sell to the public. You can get a good/great job from spray cans. Another thing not mentioned here is safety equipment. Really even with spray cans, you should be wearing paint suit and respirator. A place like paint circuit supplies the bodyshop industry. To get a good proper finish is not easy though. I agree with Rob XX going to a shop is probably the best bet.

Am I the only one that thinks the third photo in post 12 looks best? If it already has black trim I'd go with gloss black mirrors. Again, personal preference........

BTW, Napa has a base/clear system that's as good as the big name stuff for a fraction of the price (Martin-Senour). If you spray in a confined enclosure you really should use a respirator to protect against isocyanate aerosol but if spraying the mirrors on your driveway with a breeze your probably ok doing such a small area. My rule of thumb is, "If I can smell it it's too damn high!"
