any issue wiith top mounting an oil cooler

is there any issue with retaining factory oil cooler and top mounting a second where the factory intercooler would be. want extra cooling to compensate for front mount intercooler and thought why not make use of the bonnet scoop. use an oil filter sandwich plate. pressure issue? maybe have to upgrade oil pump and pick up? just thought it would look cool and be a bit different. thoughts?

The nuts-n-bolts side of me thinks it would be a nightmare to install.
The shade tree engineer side doesn't think it would lower temps.
The wise *** side wonders if you're pre-addressing a problem you don't even have.

don't see what would be hard about installation make some brackets and install with sandwich plate and lines. pre addressing what's wrong with that? better than boiling oil then addressing the problem but yeah you are probably right about heatsoak issues.

just gonna heat soak it as much as you would the stock intercooler. "just thought it would look cool" not the best reasoning for doing things...

cool double thread btw...

Yea, heat soak is not your friend, and oil retains heat much better than air. Also, The stock top mount doesn't really need to work very hard at a stand still, (when heat soak is at its worst) because you aren't boosting while idling. The oil cooler on the other hand should still be extracting a considerable amount of heat from the oil, even at idle.

With my V-mount I found that temps while cruizing were much better than with the stock setup. However idling/stop-n-go for prolonged periouds caused temps to continually climb. This is because the stock clutch fan shroud pulls air through both the rad and oil cooler, while most e-fan setups (especially on v-mounts) fail to do this. I installed a 120mm computer fan on the oil cooler and haven't had any more problems since, although with summer and a/c I may need to add another fan.

The install shoud be cake, you may even be able to re-use the tmic brackets depending on the size of your oil cooler.

Any idea what your oil temps are currently? Just because you can, doesn't mean you shoud.

if youre worried about oil temps and fmic **** then either:
a) go with a v mount set up and place oil cooler in front
b) go dual oil coolers under the ftp/turn signals ala R1-R2

also if you go fmic then ditch the turbo hood no more un used scoop and no more ricer

interesting idea, i'm not sure it would work, but if you can get some airflow over the thing it should be ok.

i've put oil temp gauges on FC's before, and the stock oil cooler doesn't do much when the car is stopped, it needs airflow, just like the IC.

Do it. Its pretty easy.

Subaru guys have been doing it for years, but they have alot more airflow in that area.

Points for doing something different. Although it doesn't seem ideal, I'd like to see how it turns out.

haha they are zero. but next month I get my greedy little hands on 5k so I'm gonna be damned close to getting it going. I really just wanted to know if it would help out the stock cooler that I will be retaining but it is behind my fmic. I actually got the idea when I got invited along for a ride in carl ruitermans (nz drifter/gymkhana driver the shop I work at sponsors) impreza gymkhana car.

Source another stock oil coooler, mount the second one above/below the original cooler, and plumb them both in series? You might need higher pressure for this setup.
Thought about trying it out myself. I'm pretty sure it's been done before. Not sure if its worth the effort.

just put in the FD regulator, and clean/inspect the front. it seems that parallel is a little better if you do 2 coolers.

or you could keep the one cooler and make some kind of duct. 1 cooler is fine, it just needs airflow.
