Any ideas as to why my cab becomes filled with rubber smelling smoke?

I'm just looking for input as to what just the hell this could be. I've only experienced this crusing down the freeway at 70 and all the sudden i can smell what seems to be burning rubber and before i know it there is smoke within the cab and i can see smoke coming from my car in my rearview mirror. It will go away in less than a minute and be gone for the rest of my drive but after i park and hit the freeway again later it will happen again. I've replaced my alternator belt (as this is the only one remaining) and inspected my wiring, nothing looks out of order. The first time this happened it scared the **** out of me, thought my engine was on fire, but sure enough as i pop the hood everything looks perfectly normal. Nothing is touching the exhaust. I'm just running out of ideas guys.

i had a similar problem with my car, it would happen every time i drive a little hard, and this heavy burning smell comes out of nowhere and i see extreme amout of smoke coming from under the passenger compartment and some comming out near the wiper blade area... i thought i blew something, but after a while of tuning my carb and making sure nothing can hit the exhaust... i test drove the car again, and AGAIN the whole car smelt bad... finally i adjusted my clutch and drove like i had to break in my clutch (which i never did (i dont know how to break in a new clutch) i was just very easy on the vehicle...) and then one day i said, hell why not... and miraculously no more smell, i do occassionally get the smell now and then after LONG hard drives (consistenly driving the vehicle up to 7k+ rpms) but it goes away... im going to get a new clutch one day.... hope this helps you in one way or another, because i really cant explain or even think of anything else similar to your situation... try driving the car hard if the smell and fumes comes.....

Clutch never slips ever and this only happens at crusing speeds.

I had an alternator belt lock up on me once, caused smoke everywhere. But it looks like you already checked that.

The only other rubber things I can think of that could be burning are vacuum/fuel hoses - check by your exhaust manifold for anything that is too close.

Maybe put it on a dyno and hunt around?
