Any advantage to a shorter intake?

I seen this mod on this kids car. It was a N/A car, 87.

He cut the elbow off and ran the intake straight over to where the carcoal canister and cold start jug was.

He then cut a square hole in the hood, right near the base of the windshield.

Does you guys think a shorter intake would make more power?

No, but the scoop bringing in cold air (that area is supposedly a high-pressure area) to the filter is definitely going to increase HP significantly...

its not a scoop, just a retangle hole, but I guess the pressure would push cold air in?

I saw a picture of that on this forum I think.

Total intake length affects powerband. The shorter it is, the more topend power you make and the less lowend power you make. Most new cars have tuned airboxes to assist power production and intake noise in the engine.
When thinking about intake tuning, everybody thinks about the manifold. Most people forget that the length of the hose from the TB to the airfilter opening above the radiator. Even airbox volume affects power.

You are a racer. You don't need power at 1-3k rpm. Give it a shot and let us know if it worked for you. If you don't want to cut a hole in the hood, you can run a hose from the front of the car to the filter. Heat is an issue. Use header wrap also.

I tend to think that it would be better to run a "cold air" intake and run the tubing like stock location then down the hole of the windshield washer resivor modification to the hole nessecary but this was used in a setup for a 14.6 et. for an na 86 base. Not saying that helped alot just a little heh

I even worked on this car, the kid had the plugs wires mixed up, had lead on the front plugs and trailing on the back plugs.

Never even checked the timing, the bolt cover for the CAS was still on!

You should see all the **** that was cut and blocked off on this car, I never seen such a hack job in my life.

The story went, he blew the engine and replaced and sold it to Arjay.

PS: I am running 98 MPH and he is running like 93 I think. Its a fun car though.

Maby i'm wrong, but I thought that "ram Air" type things didn't start to push air into the intake untill arround mach 1! If this is ture, then forget the "added HP" unless you mean from the colder air.
