TX Another exhaust question

Hey guys, long time reader, first time poster. I just got my first RX-7, I have a 91(S5 N/A with LSD!), anyways, I have street ported engine, freshly rebuilt, and i was looking into exhaust systems and I had a couple of questions. I was trying to figure out if a dual exhaust was better or single exhaust, I had seen some single exhaust on the net(apexi) and was just wondering what you guys suggested. I also saw a Borla Cat back eshaust and while I havent had any experience with Borla, they do have a super solid reputation. Please let me know what you guys think. Thanks...

Most people with the borla like it. Either way get a catback and a header at the least.

Single is cheaper, lighter, easier to install, however it will typically be louder.

Dual is easier to keep quiet, but it's more expensive, harder to make, harder to install and heavier.

Borla has a good rep from what I have heard. Apexi, HKS, Racing Beat are also good. Go with what you like/can afford/is available. If you get a major name like you seem to be looking at you'll get somthing good.

I had a Borla catback on my old 90 GTU for about 10 years. Nice sound, fairly quiet, very well made, and very durable. I gave it to my friend when I junked the car; they pretty much last forever. I'm trying to decide now between getting another one of those or the Racing Beat catback for my "new" 88 GTU.

The dual is just for looks in my opinion. As much as i'd love to have twin cannons at the back its alot more expensive than just the single. and it wont benefit you with more HP or noise.

Definetely get a new cat, 17 years of driving will more than likely have killed it. For NA dont go higher than 2.5" piping, its pointless unless you have a turbo. Get a decent sized Cannon, it will give a nice deep sound at idle and will absolutely scream when you put the foot down.

I have a hi flow muffler as a resonator, it keeps the noise to an acceptable level, and it doesnt let you down on power.

If you have a stock exhaust at the moment, you'll definetely feel the difference with a new exhaust. Pair it up with a K&N pod filter and it'll work really nice

thanks for all the advice, I just picked it up 3 days ago from the shop(was in there for 3 weeks, I have been yancy) I have been quoted a really good price on the Borla cat back exhaust, and it is understated looking and I like that, dont want to get to fast and the furious-y on my ride. One more question, I am a noob too, so please be gentle(I am learning a lot I am even looking for a junker to practice working on ha), do I need to replace all the cats, or does a full cat back system replace all the cats? I am thinking it replaces just the final cat, so should I replace all three or what would you reccomend? Thanks again in advance!

A Cat back exhaust won't replace any of the cat's. It replaces the exhaust system after the cat to the back of the car, hence Cat back. A full exhaust would replace everything.

I have a turbo so I don't remember everything that needs to be done with an N/A, but I know you have to think about how to operate your 5th/6th ports if you mess with the emissions stuff too much. For passing an emmissions test you probably only need one good cat as long as the car is properly tuned up.

Racing Beat is ok.
Duals are superior looking.

You have a 91, so your 6PI (and VDI) is activated using the air pump (and solenoid, etc.), not exhaust pressure, so you're ok there. You can hollow out the pre-cat(s), and just get a good performance 3-way cat as your main cat.

My friend and I put a Single Exit on his and it was pretty damn loud, of course it was a full exhaust though with no cats.

okay although I agree with everyone on here... I just deleted all 3 cats and went with a straight pipe from the down pipe back to a 3 in outlet muffler.. it sounds amazing ( not too loud ) and it actually gave me a lot more throttle responce than expected! not to mention it sounds better than any honda out there... lol.... rice is funny... oh and it only cost me $150.00 at my shop. so all around its not bad... just depends on the route your taking it.

Different ears have different perceptions of "loud" exhausts too. I remember with the Borla exhaust, a downpipe plus a high flow cat (Bonez then Random Technology; made little difference) on a mildly streetported motor, the overall sound was decent, but there was a bit of a drone at 1500 and 3100 RPM. I generally didn't mind this too much, but my wife and my sister each refused to ride in the car with me because it irritated them so much.

Opinions are worthless. State fact as an answer to a question, and if you don't know, don't answer.

For a system with equal flow, a dual muffler split system will always be quieter.

Very Ture. But Like I Said Before It All Depends On What You Want To Do With Your Car. I Guess It May Be Somewhat Loud But Im Surrounded By Rice Here So It Really Quiet Compared To Their's.

TX

I think I am going with a dual exhaust, I want the sound to be deeper, not ricey or anything. And I am going to replace the cat, with the Bonez cat converter and go with a dual exhaust system...next pay check, ha. Thanks for all the help though, ill post pics once I get her cleaned up, she is a beaut!
