Aluminum vs Steel

Considering buying a t2 hood, how can you tell if the hood is aluminum if you have nothing to compare it to?

It'll be freekin light, thats how you tell. Its half the weight of a steel hood, a noticable difference.

the striker for the latch is riveted onto the hood on aluminum hoods only. It's welded on for the steel hoods.

Steel hoods are about 50lbs. Aluminum hoods are about 50lbs. It really shouldn't be hard to tell just by weight. Otherwise a magnet works just fine.

No the steel ones are 50 lbs, the aluminum turbo ones are about 30 lbs (if you want really light you want the non turbo alum hood found on the verts, GTUs and misc S4 models as it is about 4 lbs lighter than the Turbo Alum hood).

And despite what torean posted, there are both alum and steel Turbo hoods.

Other way around- magnet will be attracted to steel, not aluminum (or stainless steel, titanium, magnesium, and a host of other metallic compounds)...

Not only that, but there were aftermarket ones for body repair that were both steel and alum... so you might have a S5 that butt fucked some truck and got a steel hood as a replacement if the body shop didn't use Mazda OEM body replacement parts.

Whoops! I hate typos... Of course I meant 30lbs for the AL hood.
BTW: Does anyone in Northern CA or Souther OR have an AL hood they'd like to sell for a reasonable price?
