Angry alright I am stumped, speedometer semi-problem

Ok I had no speedo, I baught a new cable.

When taking the old cable off someone before me had taken it off and removed the inner cable.... i dunno but yea wtf? why not just take the cable off all together.

So now I wazs told the cable wil be just long enough... yea wrong! it was an extra foot and a half long.... and hard as hell to connect because the spot on the tranny was rusted so the pin was just a little too big ...

So I get it on and finally get it to catch the threading, yay... or so I thought.

Now I goto drive and I have a 10 mph bounce at all speeds I went uhm wtf?? So after about a day of driving I tightened the tranny attachment and now it smooths out at 20mph.

I took it off today alltogether and crimped the metal back flat (it had bent a little in the process of putting it on) and reatached it. I have no taken and pulled every bit of the cable and zip tied it so it had no kinks, twists or slack.. all long curvs (not easy with that damn extra foot +)

and I still get a bounce up to 20mph.

WHATS WRONG!? It's not detrimental to my driving but its annoying the **** out of me.

I have this same problem sometimes when the car is cold (and only when cold). Speedo bounces all over the place at low speeds for a few miles.

Please post the solution if you find it.

I will definately post a solution if I find it, but so far nothing I have tried everything from regreasing the cable, to leaving slack, to having the cable as tight as possible and so far w/ loose cable it smooths at 45 and tight at 20. though mine does it at all times warm or cold. It's just so bad adhd plus a bouncing speedo is rather annoying

a bounce indicates either a bad or pinched speedo cable.

Alright, I figured out the problem with my speedo. It was the slack persay. I pulled the cable and routed it up further in my engine bay and then back along some wires, zip tieing it down to a good amount of stuff so that it can't move around or bounce. I went underneath the car and zip tied everything down so that the cable is taught and doesn't have leeway to bounce or move. The only problem is the last spot (from clip over brake lines) to the tranny I was only able to zip tie it down a little and it can bounce a little. Now the car only bounces up to 10 mph and then smooths out, the clicking is gone and when letting off the pedal it does not start to bounce randomly till the gas is pressed again.

I also lubricated the crap out of the speedometere backing (dashboard) until it spun very easy(no more whirring noise from behind the dash now)

It turns out (I put the rear on stand and had a friend gas it a little in gear) that up to 20 the cable would twist forward then bounce back and when tention (I don't know what to call it really) was not on the tranny the cable would vibrate and bounce. It seems the new cable was too long and doesn't have the metal (copper I think) lining that the origional one had inside the outer tube.

Sorry long post I ramble and draw things out I know....

Mine would bounce for just a second and then read no speed at all. I thought it was the cable, so I checked both connections. They were fine and I was confused, so I had a wild hair and decided to check the gear in the transmission. Sure enough thats what it was, Mazda used a plastic gear and mine had broken teeth in just one section. That would explain the jump on the speedo and then no action, or at least in my case. I swapped it out with one from a TII tranny (theyre the same between turbo and non).

I've had my mechanic re-adjust mine THREE times and have yet to solve the problem. It's gotten better atleast.

Will buying a new cable theoretically fix the problem or is the cable simply hard to adjust to perfection?

I got a new cable from Black Dragon. It is about a foot too long too. I resorted to a big loop in the engine bay and zip ties underneath to keep it from bouncing/dragging on bumps.

My speedo seems to be fine when it is tied up, but it did bounce a bit when it wasn't. I haven't checked the gear in this tranny either though.
