Question alot of questions i need answered

i have a bunch of questions i need answered. im thinking about buying a turbo second gen rex that has been sitting for a long time (more than a year), i need to know first all the things i should change/check before tring to start it.

also, i hear alot about the automatic transmission fluid (atf) trick to raise compression in the chambers. why do we use atf and not just regular oil to do this?

will the atf trick work with a turbo or will it kill it?

how do i know when to do this trick?

how do i check the turbo/intercooler to see if its bad

THANKS ALOT!!!!!!!

you peolpe are the only ones i can really ask and get some intellegent answers back

ATF works by dissolving some of the carbon build up in the combustion chamber, and around the apex seal. Regular oil doesn't contain the detergents that ATF does.

Yes it will. It won't kill the turbo, because, it is not passing through the turbo (well maybe the smoke is, but that should be minor).

You'll know if the engine is hard to start, cranks endlessly or is flooded. Not a bad idea to do to an engine that has been sitting a while. Do a search on MMO for another option.

The intercooler won't really go bad, unless there is a leak, which would be more likely to happen around the IC piping. To check the turbo, take off the turbo inlet duct, and check the compressor shaft for play. It really shouldn't move side to side. It should spin freely. Remove the turbo->IC pipe, and rub your finger around inside of the tube. If there is oil in there, (barely anything is ok, if your finger comes out coated its bad) that means most likely that an oil seal inside of the turbo needs to be fixed. If you get the car started, check the boost gauge and see that it is making good boost. If it is making substandard boost, it's probably in need of repair.
