If you have an S5, or have cats, you'll need the pump...
If you have an S4 with an open exhaust, you might need the pump....
If you have a guy that pops your hood every year for the car inspection (like I do), you need the pump...
Any questions?

If you have a stock exhaust with over 150,000 miles on it, it's only a matter of time before the precat disintagrates and clogs the cats behind it...So try not to help it along by removing the air pump (or, you might actually help it by taking away your port air, who knows?)...
If you have no air pump, you have no emissions, it's that simple...

I ran my car with the stock exhaust for a week after removing the airpump, but I was waiting for my 3" catless DP to come in. I just ditched everything was useless IMO to simplify everything. If you decide to do it, be prepared to pay the emissions tester.

Any suggestions for bribing... er, compensating emissions testers? :-)
To answer the original question, on the S4s the air pump provides air to the catalytic converters. If you care about your cats, or have to pass emissions, don't remove it. If you remove the air pump, taking out the cats is a good idea.
On the S5s, in addition, the air pump runs the 6th port actuators. If you remove it, you WILL need to create another method of opening the ports.

I didnt have to worry about 6th ports, I have a TII.. i met an RX-7 owner that worked at a dealership, and he passed my car for 50 bucks. I wasn't about to buy new cats just to pass emissions, I'd rather pay someone every two years.
