Air pump/ Air filter duct
I'm seriously thinking about installing an after market air filter ( a cone, a cold air box and everything). I read a lot about this, here and there, but I didn't see anything about the pipe that relies the stock air filter to the air pump.
If I change the air filter, I simply don't know what I'll can do with this pipe. I have an 86 GXL.
Do you have any idea where I could plug it? Thanks.

I know this picture is from a 89, but there are the same pipes on both models.

And what do you thing about the cheap air filters that there are on ebay which I could get for something like 10 $ (filter + adapter)? I wonder if their quality is as cheap as there price.

A lot of cheap (read:ebay) AFM adaptors have a square-to-cone cut so quickly that air is smacked into the square wall. A quality adaptor is more smooth flowing, and usually can't be found on Ebay. You'd be better off finding one on a trusted rotary performance website, and putting on a nice (Probably about $50) K&N filter, if you really want high-flow performance.

personally i would go with the ebay filter they are cheap but just replace them often enough and they work fine(obviously K&N is better but its hard to say if its really work it some will argue).. the adapter is usually semi universal and they usually the adapter is smaller then it should be, but all you have to do is cut the inner hole bigger so it matches the AFM, its pretty simple.
For your first question you can put on a small breather filter for the end of the hose 3-4 bucks at Autozone just use a clamp and put it on the hose. But if you can lose that Air pump alltogether.

What about removing the air pump?
Can I remove the air pump without any danger for the engine. As I can see on this picture, the air that the pump pulls goes through an air control valve and to a solenoid valve, and then further.
At first I thought that air was only mixed with the exhaust gases to pass the emission tests by decreasing the concentration of CO2 and NOx.
Thanks
Alex
