Air Injection Problems

A little background info on my car:

I bought this baby in January from a seemingly respectable guy who told me that it's engine had been rebuilt and mildly street ported 2500 miles ago. It runs wonderfully, but smog results were incredibly high. Did some minor work (intake manifold gasket, small stuff like that.) trying to get it to pass smog with no luck. Recently my clutch has been making hellish noises, but that's completely unrelated. Anyways, with my registration deadline weeks away, I decided to take my car to Paul at Rotorsports here in San Jose!

About Rotorsports:

I'm only 18 years old, so when I walk into auto shops the guys usually don't talk to me much, but right away Paul was great. I told him what the problem was and he explained to me why this and that shouldn't make too much of a difference, but that and this COULD be causing a problem, and such and such was worth taking a look at. Dropped my car off, picked it up the next day with a diagnosis and a $100 labor fee. Other places had been estimating $400 just to diagnose the problem. Went back to talk to him today and he explained EXACTLY what he thought the problem was, even drew little diagrams for me haha. I explained to him that I didn't want to spend money on a rebuild and we chatted for a while about how much work a self-rebuild at a friend's garage would involve.

SO, all in all Rotorsports is a huge thumbs up

OKAY, anyways, Paul says that the Air Injection system is running, but it's blocked somewhere in the engine housing. Also told me that this probably happened because of someone mixing&matching turbo II/NA or S4/S5 parts. I'm planning on doing the rebuild with a group of friends at their (small, two-car) garage. I have yet to look up guides & such and I have no questions yet, I just wanted to let y'all know what my car was diagnosed with in case (unlikely) any of you are dealing with a similar problem. I'll keep you updated on the project with pictures and details of my progress, and hopefully this can become an in-depth rebuild guide for s5 NA's

If they used a S4 NA center plate, then you wouldn't have the port air opening that the S5 manifold needs to supply air from the ACV/air pump. You could get around it cheap by using a LIM off an S4, but you would need to do some metal work to get the rear bolt connected the the S5 UIM. Beyond that, you would need to reroute the 2 silicon lines going to each aux port actuator, since the S4 uses just 1 line. But that's a simple fix.

Here are pics of the two NA manifolds, and the clear port air injection differences:

Sounds like another criminal act by another half *** engine rebuilder in California who thinks "there's no difference b/t front and rear rotor housings" and similar stupid thoughts. Just saying that along with the advice in the post above, you also might look at the front and rear rotor housing. Look for a R or a F stamped on the top of the rotor housings, just to the left of centerline. R stands for rear and F stands for...........yes. You can't swap the two, as in front to rear and vice versa and expect the air from the ACV to get to the exhaust ports. Ain't a gonna happen.

It sounds like this PAUL at RotorSports has his head screwed on right and might be a good place to have a RX worked on. It also sounds like ROTARYROCKET88 knows what end is up and which is down.
