Air Conditioning Clutch
Hey, my ac clutch is making a clicking sound. I'm sure its slipping. does anyone know if I can just replace the ac clutch by itself, or do I have to get a reman compressor with a new clutch? Any help would be appreciated.

The clutch pretty much just works, or it doesn't work. It is not designed to slip like a clutch in the drivetrain. It should make an audible click when it engages
If it is clicking repeatedly, you probably have an intermittant electrical connection somewhere. I had a similar issue with an intermittant short in my logicon. The clutch would engage repeatedly. In time, the heat burned the windings and caused a short that pulled excessive current popping the fuse. When I pulled the compressor, you could see the area on the faceplate and pully that were disolored from the excess heat.
If you find the short and correct it, you probably won't have to worry about replacing or repairing the unit.
If it is too late, call Autozone. They can get clutches for most compressors and will lend you a clutch removal tool for a refundable deposit.
Avoid buying replacement compressors branded 4-Seasons, Factory Air or Murray. In the MAC market they are called 4-Seizen's because many people have had repeated early failure of these compressors.

This compressors tend to fail in the "Black Death" mode making a HUGE mess of the entire system.

If your clutch is really gone, your best bet is a used one from a board member. here are many available in the parts for sale section of the board, because all the guys who remove the a/c system. You will have to depressurize the system to remove the compressor anyway.
I solved my problem by buying a used compressor from ebay. Working great in Dallas, TX where it was 87*f and humid just couple of days ago.
Good luck!

Oh, I see you are in Australia; maybe you don't have Autozone. So a used compressor if available would be an even better bet.

I just pulled the belts off for another issue and put them all back on. I'm pretty sure I've got them all squared away. Also, there is zero noise when the car is just at idle, it only makes the noise when I turn on the AC at the logicon and immediately goes away after I turn it off.
For Jackhild...I'm in Melbourne, Florida. You may be on to something else though. The other day, my seat belt light came on like a minute after I started the car and I got a few low/weak sounding beeps...then it went away. Day later, same thing happend when I started the car and my headlights actually popped up real quick then shut again. Weird. I'm clueless as to what that could be. I'm really good with electrical issues and this sounds like a short to a ground somewhere but ****, where do I begin to look. Any ideas. Rob
