Air Bag light flashing....why?

Occasionally, I will start my car up and the Air Bag light will start flashing 6 pulses (I think it is 6... ).

If I shut the engine off and restart it, the light will not be flashing.

I have looked through the FSM to see if I could find out what this flashing code could indicate and cannot find anything.

Does anybody know what it means? Why does it not flash after restarting the engine?

Is this thing going to blow up in my face while I'm crusing down the highway?

that means it is about to deploy right in your face next time you start it

It will only go off if one of the sensors has been triggered off so no it wont go off in your face but if your face is too close to your *** it will!!!!

Flashing a specific number indicates that there is an error in the system (the number will tell us what sensor or error) and that the system is not working. It will not deploy or trigger, while flashing (unless you get under there and jumper the wires yourself).

The numbers are usually 2 digit however. Sure its not 5 flashes followed by one (for code 51 indicating a bad underhood sensor).

This light is still flashing and it is driving me ******* nuts!!!

It is 6 even pulses....pause.....6 even pulses.....pause.....over-and-over.

Could it be a 66? Is there a 66? What is it?

Where are you finding these codes? I have the FSM and I can't find anything about them.

Sometimes if I shut the ignition off and start the car back up it comes on with all of the other idiot lights and then goes off as expected. WTF?

My SRS manual needs to be reinstalled. when I get it running again, i will check to see if there is a code 66 or just plain 6.

The dealer should know if you call them as well.

My 91 vert did the same thing when I bought it. A bad airbag self-diagnostic module, I think it was. It's right under the driver's side dash, blue box I think. I had to bite the bullet and go get a new one at Mazda, the blinking drove me nuts too. Only cure as far as I know, about 250 bucks... A bit fuzzy on the details here, but I DO rembmer the big bucks for a stinking box!

I would pull the battery cable, and also resolder the components in the blue boxes under the dash.

Everything else needed resoldering!

I might try that resoldering idea. I just hate the idea of messing with any of that airbag ****.

Knowing my luck I would unhook the battery, resolder the guts of that blue box, and as I'm hooking the battery back up the airbag would deploy.

I'll pull the bulb out of the idiot light cluster before paying $250 bucks for that damn box.

Thanks for the help guys......I'll let you know what I end up doing.

You're going to love this!!!

I started the car, got out and crawled under the dash on the driver's side......making sure my face was out of air-bag-deployment range....., and pounded the hell out of those blue boxes under there with my hand. PROBLEM SOLVED!!! Light went out and hasn't come back on after doing some driving. I felt like the Fonz (most of you are probably too young to even understand that comment, but oh well).

How's that for great Mazda electrical components??

Something in those boxes probably does need to be resoldered, but I am a little leary of disconnecting them because I noticed some big yellow tag attached to the connectors on those boxes alerting the disconnector that he must first disconnect a couple of wires up in the steering column. I decided to leave it alone for now. I really don't feel like dealing with my steering wheel blowing up in my face as I try to unhook it.

When I totalled my last 7, that airbag deployed and it just totally blew the whole steering column apart. I couldn't believe it!

Am I being a little over paranoid about deployment......?

Thanks for correcting me with that tiny bit of useless knowledge.
I definitely wouldn't have made that comment had I known it was a Ford component.

A late night resurrection.

I tried the bash the box solution above, no luck.

Google couldn't help me find the SRS manual referred to above, so that I could decipher my blinking code.

If you know where an electronic version of this Airbag book is, please link it for me.

Thanks. I've just about run through a box of dark purple post-its trying to adequately cover it up. God knows what good dark purple is for the business world, but it does ok for blanking out flashing lights.

It's been a few days since I read the code, but it was either 5 or 6 flashes, then a long pause, then the flashes. No short pauses.

More digging reveals this thread which has some pictures of FSM pages and the code breakdown.

looks like i have the dirty steering wheel ring or a bad steering connector, as 1 of my 2 horn buttons also has stopped working.
