The age old question arises........
what to do now. I have some money set to arrive in a few weeks. So here is the deal, I'll give my options, with a little added info regarding each, you tell me your thoughts on how I should proceed. Along with some sort of reasoning/opinion as to why. Also the base for this project is a 1990 GXL (pig). So here we go.
1) TII swap.......but-
-using the N/A driveline for as long as it lasts
-waiting to find the necessary electronic to make it work or
-may blow a large wad of my budget on an EMS
-J-specs can be iffy
2) Rebuild my N/A myself (with Garfinkle)
-street port
-will be able to afford many other mods
-will be able to finish the car sooner
-no boost fun
So you see they both have pluses and minuses to me. If I go the TII route, I won't be able to afford paint and other cosmetic repairs untill maybe this summer. But if I get the TII and put it in I will have a better base with which to build on. I was also considering having Kevin Landers do the rebuild since he is only a few hours away and I can get away with hand delivery and pick up. Help me. I have about 2 weeks to decide before she's getting torn apart, so let the wealth of knowledge fly.

If you get a TII ported you will love yourself. EMS is the best decision you will ever make. Once you get it done it makes everything so much easier. You have complete control over the fuel in all sorts of aspects. And as for having power, I have power at any place in the RPM range, you will too with a stock turbo. And believe me once you feel that turbo kick in, and the car just starts feeling like it wants to pull off the road, you'll never want to go back to n/a again.

I agree, but I am having a hard time locating a J-spec for a good price. Per jacobcartmill I was looking into getting a motor from FC3S.org, but they wouldn't take a deposit and won't have a motor when I need one. Any other importer is way too expensive for something that may or may not be a good motor. If you notice they all have essentially no warranties for rotaries. Startup, but woo-hooo, my blown NA will start. Help me!!!!!!!!
Also, as a sidenote. Garfinkle thinks we should teardown the NA and see whats good, then possibly either port it and rebuild it, or make a hybrid engine from all the generations and adapt a turbo to it. Full custom. With his help this is actually very budget friendly.

i have seen more turbo II living at mechanics shop than on the road. my friends burnt up and has not been right since,even after a new wiring harness, motor,etc. reliability you need to consider if she is a daily driver, or if you just want to go play at the track,street,etc. i love my n/a but i can't wait till i get my third gen. with a good streetport you can really see a differnce.

Although I have had my fair share of problems they have mainly been because the car was originally completely stripped in the engine bay. The guy before me basically put it together as best he could. Aside from that my car is very reliable. Starts up every day now. Drives fine, you don't have to get into boost if you don't want to, but it's there in case you need it. A hybrid engine is also a good idea. But why are you so adiment about getting a Jspec motor?

Well I don't really need a J-spec, but a USDM TII is even harder to find. I really don't care if its blown or not since it will be torn apart once I get it. Garfinkle and I have decided to tear into the NA and see whats up then go from there.

You sound like your on a budget. FORGET THE BOOST. If you don't have the money to do the turbo swap correctly, you're going to end up with a hacked up car that isn't reliable.

In the motor sense, it would be using NA rotors with the rest of the motor being turbo parts.
IE like a 4 port NA.
In the turbo sense, people typically use a stock turbine housing and wheel, stock CHRA, but swap the compressor wheel and housing for something that flows more.

What have i learned? bottom end power is pretty worthless once you learn how to drive stick.
Oh and really whats the difference in hp/tq from 2-3800 (ooooh, 1800 rpms ) between NA and Turbo motors?
Once you get boost you will never go back. Santiago i think you are in denial. BTW my TII has 137k miles(reliable? Yeah). stock everything except apex seals at 70k. It can hand GSRs their asses. Try that with an N/A. I would go with a streetported TII swap (USDM) and minor upgrades like exhaust and intake and maybe an SAFC and/or MBC or bling it with the EBC.
Go turbo or go home.

Denial? about what? I drive below 3k rpms all day you think a TII's power before boost is going to impress me? Not likely. My N/a has 163k+ miles on it. No engine work at all. "apex seals" as you call them means you cracked open the engine and rebuilt it. And I didn't say anything about reliability I said fun all day and all night. By them time I get half way through driving my TII around town I will need to pump gas again. I think your the one in denial. I admit the TII can be way more powerfull than an N/a. But as for a budget sports car the TII is not. The N/a is fun right out of the box and has less engine damage possibilities. Boost increases wear on everything and you cannot deny that. My own TII isn't going to be a car driven often. I'd go broke before the year was out. To impress I have to go big with it. A turbo upgrade changes the point at which turbo spool occurs. Besides he is short on cash isn't he? well that means that the cost of upgrading/maintaining a TII is probably not in his budget. I already spent a couple of grand on my TII to begin the project of getting it restored and back into good shape. Guess what it still isn't drivable. Engine has 127k miles on it and it pukes smoke like a mother.

Well I have been from both worlds of the FC3S, when I turned 16 I had an 87 Se... I thought it was pretty quick for a 1.3l I sold that to a friend in hopes to buy something unique, something Fast.. what I bought was a 88 Turbovert with a complete drivetrain/ engine swap
With a major streetport (loopy idle), ported turbo, polished intake and with a Standalone in it and some other mods. I drove that aroud thinking it was a Little quicker then the se. A bud of mine bought a 91 coupe' and he let me take it for a spin......... its was like comparing black to white
N/A's are Slooooow- there missing the most important part of a rotary engine
I mean its like going from 12 lbs of boost to nothing I went from running with n/a eclipses to running with c4 corvettes and z28's and my **** isn't even tuned yet
you will not regret spending the extra money going with the turbo swap

Built NAs are pretty fun. Do a good street port, dump a couple hundred pounds of weight, put a header on and get suspension upgrades and your FC will put a big smile on your face when you drive it. It's also nice to get an average of 22 miles per gallon in mixed city, highway, and rotary screaming hard driving.
