add horse to my car...
i have an 88 rx7 GXL (non turbo), and i want to add horse to my car. I know it comes stock with around 145 HP, and i got a new exhaust system which put it up to about 160 HP. I'm pretty new to the car enthusiast world, and i am wondering what else i should do. I was thinking about a new intake and stuff. Any suggestions?

You really want to ditch the cats if you can. At least go with just a high flow main cat. Then get a cone intake with some way of getting cold air to it(custom cold air intake, cold air box, etc). Maybe get an s-afc and get on a dyno. Can also advance the timing some to get gains, but ask around on how much to advance it to be safe. Oh, and weight reduction is your friend.

I tend to agree about loosing weight, i made a huge difference, and I like my n/a, I'd much rather have it then my roommate's tII, he seems to be fixing it for some reason or another every other week. But don't get me wrong there's alot to be said about a good turbo. but as far as the original question, yeah an intake is your next move if you've done the exhaust, it only mades sense, if you have alot going out you might as well have alot comming in

TO ESTIMATE YOUR ACTUAL HP... YOUR REAR WHEEL HP (WHICH IS THE ONLY THING THAT COUNTS) WOULD BE ROUGHLY 100, WITH AN EXHAUST IT WOULD PUSH YOUR RWHP UP TO MABYE AROUND 115. SAME GOES WITH ADDING AN INTAKE, YOU DONT ADD FLY HP, ONLY RWHP. TO CHANGE YOUR FLY HP LOOK INTO REPLACING A MANIFOLD, INJECTORS, PORTING OR SOMETHING TO THAT EXTENT.

And what exactly would these "waaaaaaaay better" lubricants be?

ok there are lots of threads ont his so search, but basically heres how it goes:
1 exhaust
2 intake
3 weight reduction
4 internals...ie porting manifolds or engine
5 forced induction/ nos
the first three are realatively inexpensive and generally have no ill effects...better exhaust is extramely effective..guess u have that tho..go get cold air (or make it its not too hard)..if you are serious about it, remove all the extra **** from your car..ie power steering, ac, foam padding, maybe some electronics, spare tire (personally i think thats stupid, but if you want it does save weight) etc.
then comes the more expensive or complicated, although also more effective ****... porting your engine requires disassembly, but can net you lots of hp if done right, forced induction and nos are obvious, porting of intakes can get you 5-15 hp, but is kinda hard to do.
after that..use your imagination. its not hard to find ways to make your car faster. its generally not even hard to do it. basically it all comes down to how much time and $$$ u want to put into it.
but.. if you arent too crazy..the bright side is that i have about 4k total in my car (i do all my own work tho) and i would estimate 190 or so hp (maybe 170 to the wheels?) any more than that and ur talking some serious cash tho..or at least more than i have.
good luck
